Just a guess, but I would think a hollow torque tube would have a resonant frequency that would get excited when a certain amplitude is reached.
If you do a cut where it resonates, are you able to then keep lowering the level to a point where the resonating stops?

Re: 4 track preview
I would think you'd need to sync the two tape machines (2trk playback machine and 4track record) somehow to minimize drift and keep the delay time consistent over the side.

Also, It's good to have a calibration disc so you know the frequency response of your playback system/cartridge.
The "Ultimate Analog Test LP" will give you this.

It's gonna end worse if anything affects MDC's ability to produce lacquer blanks.

All of the above + Also Instead of 1 thousand artists pressing 50 thousand records each, you have 50 thousand Artists pressing 1000 records each.

Could be related to suction / how the chip is being picked up?
Maybe move the suction tube farther or closer to the stylus and see if it helps?
2 cents : )

Thanks Andybee! I appreciate the info : )
Is there another tool that is used along with the knife edge to get it really smooth?
Any kind of mold forming or sanding that takes place. There are some pressings that are just perfectly shaped while others are pretty rough.

Rough edges on pressings / Dull trim tool ?
Hello, Something I've noticed more and more lately from US pressing plants is the rough and sometimes sharp edges on new pressings. I feel this doesn't do much for the aesthetics or sense of quality when a customer handles the record.... I guess I'm just pointing this out as an observation in the ho...

We do need more options for styli for sure. Resharpening would be amazing as well.
Do you have any documentation currently?
i.e. old spec sheets for neumann / micropoint etc ?

Sorry for the extremely late reply!
I'll refer you to Flow or others here who are more familiar with the technical aspects of DMM systems.

Re: What does it take to 'blow a head' ??
Thanks for the info flo. I also want to add: Never be afraid to say no to a client if the program material is risky. It's just not worth it, especially when you don't have a backup head. Having said that, I would love to be able to find where that threshold of destruction is... but can't afford to f...

With the 80 another thing to consider is the efficiency of the groove nestling do in part by the direct drive pitch motors as apposed to the belt system on the 70

Re: Bad lacquers quality
I have a new box of 12" MDC masters (L10061) that are "Dished " pretty severe. (i.e.The aluminum substrate is not flat.) Suction will only hold down the non-preferred side. My guess is that either they are bend in transit or when one side is coated and dried first, the aluminum gets bowed with the l...

Re: Left/right channel balance on records
My guess is that not all cutters or cutting situations are equal. -If the session was attended there could have been distractions and L&R balance was overlooked. -Tape machines not calibrated or aligned correctly. -If the cutter was lazy or in a hurry or the lathe was not calibrated. - The mix itsel...

You can use the disc in this link to check the L & R playback levels on your turntable.

Re: A couple of VMS 70 Questions
There's a capacitor in the programmers that is associated with the time delay on the head lift.
It may be that capacitor that needs replaced.
Does the head lift with a different programmer? (45 or 33)
