Re: Don't plate

Well said Clint! I feel the same. To much nitpicking. Not enough productive talk. One man's nit picked is another troll's improved understanding of the nomenclature of the sophisticated. One must understand the distinction of the terms to preclude conflation and ensure good forum signaling. If one ...

Re: Don't plate

We call a tissue a Kleenex. Some people call soda pop a "coke" and A LOT of people call A Canada Goose a Canadian Goose. The folks who call Pepsi, Coke, are not making Pepsi. The guys who say Canadian Goose, perhaps without realizing it, are talking about something done to a different kind of "bird...

Re: New Project

Hot looker. Love the new pix added. So the gear on the tt drive shaft drives a gear which moves the carriage mechanism/tone arm, all direct and coupled. Does the intended platter have a chuck center hole that mates with the drive shaft arbor by flange-flared friction, and the hold down (shown) is fo...

Re: Don't plate

Aye, Angus. However, I fear that an internet forum is not a successful venue for the discussion of technical ideas wherever exactitude is shunned to the extent that nomenclature is cloaked in superposition with nearby but not desired undertakings. Plating ≠ forming. Engineer ≠ graduate. Galvanizing ...

Re: dial indicator platter lathe turntable

I think +/- 1 mil means no higher and no lower than 1 mil runout, rather than only allowing a single mil of runout. You may want to check the floor, first. First, is it level? Self-leveling concrete can help - especially since you can saw a separate block of concrete from the rest of the floor slab,...

Hey serif Ask the guy who's is going to fire up the baths so as to do metal work where you are what he is really doing ??? ... No need. It was the E. E./ landlord who informed me that he is not Electroplating. He says he is Electroforming - or, simply, making parts. He is almost as adamant as I tha...

Re: complete system wanted

I don't know that Stereophonic is WRONG, though, is he? I mean, if he calls what he does "mastering" to his clients, I think he is using some pretty common terminology that they'll understand, yes? We are dealing with so many media now that the term has multiple usages. This is true. He, however un...

Re: dial indicator platter lathe turntable

There will be a peak and a trough in the revolution of any platter. A once-around will show that most have to rise about 1 mil and fall below the baseline by about 1 mil during the single revolution. Less than that is better than pro. So, again, +/- 1 mil is actually 2 mils, peak-to-peak. I just did...

Re: Don't plate

In all electroforming, the electrodeposition of same metals onto the backside of the form, as it forms, is obviously desired. However, this is not finishing. This is forming. Conversely, when the Ni is electrodeposited onto the Ag coating that has been sprayed onto the lacquer recording, the Ag face...

They are one of the best. The best sources are usually the hardest to reach. Don't mess with any low lying fruit. (;

Re: Don't plate

well... let's say the silver-layer is the first step in making a negative (father) as most of us know this is usually done by spraying the lacquer with a mixture of ammonical silver (?) and glucose formaldehyde (?). -> neither electroplating nor electroforming! - i would call this (liquid) chemical...

Re: dial indicator platter lathe turntable

Sounds as if you are referring to a way to measure the platter's runout. This is similar to measuring the runout of a disc brake. The brake is mounted vertically and the platter, horizontally. Otherwise, it's a similar measurement. The Scully steel weldment is to be leveled using a spirit level's ai...

...I can't possibly say vinyl mastering… Even though most my clients call it that when they hire me!... To preclude misunderstandings, I like to be brutally honest about the service (not) on offer. They can call it, mastering, if it feels better to do so, but there is no logical reason to call it a...

Don't plate

Hi, this section should not be called, Plating &.... there is no use for plating when making stampers. Electroforming is what is done. Clean. Spray. Electroform. Part (not plate). Continue... Plating is a fail.

Re: complete system wanted

Keep in mind that cutting a disc is also, technically, previous to actual mastering. The cut side is used as a disposable mandrel in order to make the metal master by means of electrodeposition. Apollo and Transco call the over-sized, shiny blanks, masters. But analog tape is also called a master wh...

Re: options: buy a plant, or a mastering solution...? Help!?

I'll not gainsay MossBoss who is experienced enough to know what he's talking about. He is obviously trying to be understood and is, therefore, using the slang of audio people. However, this slang is usually pointing at a trade on one's immediate left, rather than pointing at what one is actually do...

Re: what's the weight of a lathe?

The L. J. Scully LS-76 (without the drive package, but with the microscope and chip jar) is 600 lbs., uses 600 Watts, goes to 600 LPI, has 600 Ohm (phono output Z), and runs on 60 Hz (as well as 50). Keeps it simple. The weird part is the 6V regulator for the 5V Vcc.

Nice shot of how the Scully ways are pyramidal, but with the top of the pyramid lopped off. They "boogie" mesas.
