Thanks!
Yes, a lot better.
Wait a minute. So - one can use your blanks to emboss? That woudn't require a diamon stylus or would it?

Re: Vinyl Cutting Lathe Wanted

Hi all, It looks like I will not be able to mount my WESTREX 3D on my Presto 14-B lathe (I have both Westrex and Grampian/Presto mounts with it, the drive motors and assembly have been restored with new rubber mounts and oil and grease)..so it should probably leave if its not getting used...feel fr...

Re: Pressing Shellac Records?

Sure thing the press can certainly do it but why? Why do people still drive and maintain Ford "T" models ? I understand the disadvantages of shellac vs. vinyl. But there are still plenty of vintage mechanical and "Astatic" heavy weight crystal cartridge players out there. The other day, while witho...

Re: Slight tremolo in cut?

Thanks a lot, you pinted me in the right direction. I ffound and fixed the problem. Turns out that the 33 rpm idler wheel was missing its top retainer ring allowing it to travel upwards and (slightly) rubbing against the platter. We manufactured a felt spacer lubed it added a new (wider, plastic) re...

Re: Slight tremolo in cut?

I don't know the machine and I cant really help with the problem, but for clarity for you and future readers I want to disambiguate one thing: Tremolo is defined as: low frequency amplitude modulation. The volume gets louder/softer/louder/softer etc. Vibrato is defined as: low frequency pitch modul...

Re: Slight tremolo in cut?

It's speed variation - make sure the idler wheels on your Rek-O-Kut are absolutely 100% clean. I had this when I accidentally got a fingerprint on one. It's especially problematic on piano music or any other instrument with long extended notes. Thanks for the hint. Will clean everything and try it ...

Slight tremolo in cut?

Fellow trolls:

After re-arranging my equipment over the last few days, I ran the first test cut today and noticed a slight tremolo, almost like a "special effect", especially noticeable in the higher frequency spectrum. Any idea where to look for the culprit?

Pressing Shellac Records?

Howdy fellow trolls:

A question for you: Would an arbitrary record press be able to press shellac records instead of vinyl? Are the shellac mixture recipes known and/or available?

Thanks for your answers.

How to read a test sweep

Howdy fellow trolls:

I cut a logarithmic test sweep 20 - 20Khz and recorded the playback (78rpm, Reko-O-Cut, Grampian "C") . Now .. how am I supposed to understand it? Particularly: What are those small peeks in the upper frequency bands?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Synchronous AC motor for leadscrew

Be carefull because there might not be enough torque on the Gemini to drive the rek o kut leadscrew i You may not be able to use any units that use some form of feedback (like magnets under the turntable). And most of them are direct drive while the Gemini has a belt drive which makes things a lot ...

dimi751 wrote:What's the torque specs on the Gemini ??
Not a lot I am sure. But it *might* be enough for a lead screw if it has an appropriate pulley. It would for sure be an easy solution. And there might be a few other turntables around with the same technology and more torque.

Re: Synchronous AC motor for leadscrew

I am talking about a Gemini TT-1100 . http://www.amazon.com/Gemini-TT-1100USB-Belt-Drive-Turntable/dp/B001UJS9EE Yes, the motor is small. But it should have enough torque to run a lead screw, especially with the right pulleys. I have a Rek-O-Kut ./ Grampian. And I am currently thinking about buildin...

Re: Synchronous AC motor for leadscrew

Even a cheapo 200 Dollar turntable has 33,45 and 78rpm via electronic switching and belt drive. Surely that would be good enough to drive a lead screw? Most of them have some form of +/- ten percent of speed variation. I think it should be possible to patch some electronics into the equation to have...

Re: Brand new looking for lathe suggestions

I started about 1/2 year ago with an old RECORDIO by Wilcox-Gay. The crystal cutting head didn't work so I bought a Presto Tombstone. Though I got some results, it wasn't anything close to what a 'real' record would deliver - neither in terms of sound quality, nor in loudness. I went ahead and got a...
