Re: The farmer and his plow - When I set out to build a record cutter
Regarding ball screws, I considered "upgrading" the half scale VMS 70 to ball screws but abandoned it as an idea due to concerns over noise. The VMS 70 saddle actually does run on ball bearings (which I did not know when I made the half scale model). If I had known, I suspect I still would not have ...

Yes, retaining the housing and magnet is a sound idea.
I look forward to seeing more of your posts on this project.

Re: Half scale VMS 70
Hi Thomas, I was looking at your cutter head. Its very professionally done but I wonder if you shouldn't just bite the bullet and go 100% home made by winding your own coils. While tweeters may be convenient I can't help but think they are not ideal and given the splendid effort you have already mad...

Re: Half scale VMS 70
Hi All, As with all things, it takes longer than you think it will. If I had some money I could speed up the next part of the project (mostly electrical / electronic parts). Would anyone be interested in making their own half scale VMS or making it from parts? I'm considering selling new parts based...

Cabinet porn...
You open it and all the records come out in a sliding rack.
Or that's the idea! That feature is yet to be implanted but.... damn.... I love that cabinet he made.
Wilson. Cheers,

I used to make needles with a jig but you're limited to one geometry. Now that I got used to using the tool & cutter grinder for making embossing cones I thought I'd use it for needles too. Step 1: Parting off on the Clarkson T&C grinder IMG_7554.jpg Step 2: Cutting the locating face on the Tiplap T...

Re: 1:10 conical reamer for Neumann Stylus DIY
Well done! That is a novel solution to a difficult problem. Model engineers have the same problem reaming small tapered holes and what they do is to make a " D Bit Reamer ". https://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/threads/making-a-tapered-d-bit.23861/ It's usually done on a lathe but there seems no...

Making an embossing needle with an air spindle
Hi All, I made an air spindle for my grinder to make super accurate embossing cones. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9LnN5laF0Y I don't have a working record lathe. Would anyone like to test one of these for me ? Your choice of cone angle (its 87 degrees in the video). Postage costs only (I am in t...

Re: Another modern brushless DD motor to experiment with!
Is the plug "special" ?
I've had a lot of experience finding (and sadly making) weird plugs.
Can you post a picture of it?

Re: Air spindles
Thanks for the comments guys. It's made of brass. Bored 16mm, lapped & polished, cross drilled with two rows of four, 4 thou holes, about a half inch from each end. The compressor is a very old Binks Bullows : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265197028203?var=0&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&tool...

Air spindles
Hi All, I recently made an air spindle for another purpose (tool & cutter grinder) but I hear that they were used in record lathes. Now that I've made one I could fit it to my Neumann VMS70 project but aren't they a massive source of white noise? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otwqjbgnxqw Cheers, W...
