Re: Hacking The Teenage Engineering PO-80

Excellent work, markrob! I'm glad my 7 inch idea was useful! Nice to see a 3D files for groove pitch! I had rolled a bunch of tape on my gear to increase runtime, worked better than you might think. I found a good number was 4:05, edge to label, at 45 RPM. If I'm correct, that's 105 LPI? So, I'm exc...

Re: Hacking The Teenage Engineering PO-80

Here is my mod to cut 7 inch.
You'll want at least a 1.5mm blank however, preferably 2mm.
All done from adapted stock parts, cuts perfectly for me.

Re: Hacking The Teenage Engineering PO-80

It appears I have sorted it out. I found that removing additional weight solved all my problems. I have the tensioning mechanism on and set to 1.1 to 1.3 cm. Anything more and I start hearing noise. The cut is dead silent now and appears to track perfectly fine on a real turntable. I have everything...

Re: Hacking The Teenage Engineering PO-80

All right, I tested it on a poly carbonate (CD) disc, instead of polystyrene.
Behaves a lot better, but there’s still a squeal, however, at much lower volume.
I’ll attach my results, I’m too afraid to damage my needle.
Just gonna wait till one of you can give me some advice.

Re: Hacking The Teenage Engineering PO-80

All right, I got everything set up. However, when I went to make a record, it was making a terrible squealing sound. I immediately lifted the stylus. I’m guessing the angle is off, but I’m too afraid to experiment and possibly damage my new stylus. I was curious if you could offer any insight. Thank...

Re: NEWBIE STARTER GUIDE!

Any thoughts on heating a sapphire embossing stylus? Is it pointless for embossing? Has there been any research on this? Also, I believe you’re the person behind recordlatheparts.com? If applicable, what temperature are those styli rated for? Just bought a stylus from there, can’t wait to try it out...

Re: NEWBIE STARTER GUIDE!

Might I inquire if Sapphire Embossing on PETG is a bad idea?
I’ve read that PETG is softer than Polycarbonate, wouldn’t the be beneficial for fidelity and stylus life?

Awesome, cheers, MarkRob!

Also, might you have an MP3 of how the sapphire sounds?

Re: Hacking The Teenage Engineering PO-80

Hi, I'm glad this is working out for you. I've been working to improve and add some features. Most important is the ability to add replaceable styli that can be purchased from vendors like Mike at recordlatheparts.com. I've found that cutting off the short length of the stylus that extends past the...

Re: Gakken Toy Record Maker: Ovservations and Questions

There's enough detail in that video to figure it out. I did not 3D print any parts to make it cut 7 inch. It's all done from adapted stock parts. As for 3D printed discs, I'm not the person to ask. I've never used 3D printing, in fact, I'm just about to order some of MarkRob's upgrade parts to get p...

I hope you weren’t expecting a more elegant solution to cut 7 inch.
It’s not pretty, but it works perfectly.

Re: Gakken Toy Record Maker: Ovservations and Questions

I'll post a video an in depth video tomorrow! I did it much differently than that guy. For the video you posted, that way is bad, because the cutterhead is not inline with the spindle! That makes all sorts of fidelity problems. Mine is inline, it requires spare plastic to reinforce a side, a solderi...

Re: Gakken Toy Record Maker: Ovservations and Questions

I later learned the onboard amp fried itself as I was connecting it to external speakers. I just hooked the cutting head up to an external EuroPower EP2000. 2000 Watts bridged at 4 ohm! I also modded it to cut 7 inches, I just adapted the existing parts! So now I can use an actual turntabl...

You are mistaken, I’m using it normally.
I’m playing back with the play head.
It is effecting ALL audio on the machine.

Re: Gakken Toy Record Maker: Ovservations and Questions

Please Help! I just got the Gakken, everything worked amazingly! The records I cut were literally perfect, first try. I plugged it into my HiFi and then it started to play nothing, only the hit of the beat would be audible (and distorted). The listening speaker smells like magic smoke, any ideas on ...
