Re: Dual/Poltz type counterweight

It's french-made, with a motor by dual, overhead probably poltz and a head by pierre clement... there's a couple of 'em around on the forum but not a whole lot and most post about them are pretty ancient... Here's some pics of a similar machine with a counterweight spring head mount Capture d’écran ...

Dual/Poltz type counterweight

Hello everybody today i made some first steps towards good cuts, after cutting and embossing inaudible noise for a couple of months. I had bought a machine which had no counterweight of any kind in place, so i had to figure one out myself. I before that i was embossing at 230grs :| I looked at pictu...

Woodglue records

Here’s a writeup of a project i’ve been working on the last few months. The basic premise of this project is: can i make a record in the same way i make zines. That is to say diy, cheap and dirty. I’ve been making zines (about music and other things) since my teenage years and when i was a kid i rea...

Re: First experiences cutting records on a no-frills mono machine – questions how to proceed.

Thanks for replying, yes i have been working on it, but not so much advancing documented in this thread: Fun with Failure Thanks for the clear info about blanks, will get my hands on some polycarbonate when i get back to my machine (i'm traveling a bit in the comming months, so the project is on pau...

Re: Fun with failure

Well, i do know how to hold a soldering iron, and do have a multimeter i did quite a bit of effects building in my days, but mainly recreating other people circuits or sticking together bits and pieces of different circuits with varying degrees of success. the lingo is pretty foreign to me though "v...

Re: Fun with failure

Hey Mark, you already helped me earlier with this transformer biznes :) , but i didn't heed your advice and took the diy-route. I don't know how to "cut one watt at 1khz", do i need to have any special equipment for this, like a signal generator or such, or can i do it with appliances i have laying ...

Fun with failure

So, it's been about half a year since i got a small lathe, and the first acceptably sounding record is still to pop up. This last couple weeks i've been on an offensive to get the whole thing to work better. Made the machine look a little more like frankenstein DSC01588.JPG DSC01587.JPG First action...

some instructions on how to build the lathe described in my earlier posts to this thread.
Just wanted to say this is a massive and very generous share. The nearest thing to a lathe in kit from I've seen on here.
I'm sure loads of people will build on this in years to come.
so thanks :)

First experiences cutting records on a no-frills mono machine – questions how to proceed.

Hello! To start off my short personal history of record cutting so far :) So at the start of the year i got a small suitcase-lathe, a 30’s or 40’s dual-machine, modified to run at 33 and a third. DSC00460.JPG It has a mono head by the frenchie Pierre Clement (M1) that proposed the first challenge: t...

Re: I need a bigger amp, but how big?

I just noticed you ( markrob ) also reacted on the original (6yr old) thread i am referencing to above :) There you say The turns ratio should be around 1.7:1 for an impedance ratio of 3:1 (they are related via the square root). Even though you measured 23 ohms DC resistance, the impedance at 1 Khz ...

Re: I need a bigger amp, but how big?

Okay, one last thing about your explanation puzzles me: I know you can't measure impedance correctly with a multi meter like i did on my head, but i thought it did give a ballpark figure. So if the head reads circa 23 ohms dc resistance, why should i be stepping up the 8 ohms to 500 ohms? In the exa...

Re: I need a bigger amp, but how big?

For other head impedances, use the formula: Tap Watts = 70.7 Squared / Head Impedance (5000 / Head impedance). Connect to the closest tap available. Thanks for this info! that transformer is unfortunately unavailable in Europe where I'm at, and 70.7v systems seem to be uncommon here, but i can find...

Re: I need a bigger amp, but how big?

- Maybe your head is ment to be used with a different amp (output)? The 20 Ohm reading (I assume DC reading from a multimeter) indicates quite high impedance. So maybe your head should be driven of a high voltage output? Maybe you should use a transformer to fit your head impedance to the common lo...

I need a bigger amp, but how big?

This weekend i made my first feeble steps in the world of record cutting. I had read quite a bit on this forum, which had tempered my expectancy quite a bit and indeed the first cut has me sonically getting about to par with those first edision cylinder recordings. Loads of surface noise, and beyond...
