Re: Vacuum Pump Research
Hi, Thanks a lot for your replies. Really helpful to me! I just bought this 12V vacuum pump yesterday to see what I can get from it, using plastic jar using 6mm silicone tube. https://www.why.gr/en/%CE%BA%CE%B1%CF%84%CE%B1%CF%83%CF%84%CE%B7%CE%BC%CE%B1/open-hardware/motors-and-actuators/vacuum-pump-...

Re: 1:10 conical reamer for Neumann Stylus DIY
Hi, It's really amazing that you make this with a reamer! I just 3d print (in aluminum) a torque tube with 1.38mm hole and the 1:20 cone seems that fits well. Don't test it yet, cause I'm building a new head for it. What kind of aluminum tube do you use exactly? check mine below: aluminum torque tub...

Vacuum Pump Research
Hi, Recently I decide to change my noisy vacuum suction machine with a vacuum pump. Goal, is to achieve less noise while cutting. I've seen many people here use this oilless Rietschle VTE-8 Vacuum Pump for their lathes >>> https://www.gardnerdenver.com/en-gr/thomas/rotary-vane-pumps-compressors/pico...

Re: "Brother Singer" Cutterhead
Greetings to all the community, Hope you are good & healthy and continue cutting beautiful records :) This coronavirus quarantine gives me time to restart sketching and build a new dynamic cutterhead. I will use body made from steel - for attaching the drivers & the extra housing probably will be pl...

Re: "Brother Singer" Cutterhead
Hi, It's been a long time since I have an update to my thread. Until now, I 'm very happy with my cuts and "Brother Singer" lathe & cutterhead works fine for me & I love it. :D I recently install to my lathe an oil dashpot, that I have made. The reason I decide to use an oil dashpot is because I rui...

Re: "Brother Singer" Cutterhead
Hi, tragwag, your suggestion about using rubber grommet is amazing! thanks for that! Mark, I read about transfer function. Very interesting paper. Also, I have tried the “wow&flutter” app. I can measure a 1005hz - 1006Hz in my 1kHz signals, that is pretty constant I think, but I can’t understand how...

Re: "Brother Singer" Cutterhead
Hi, Thanks for your kind words soeffingodly! Thanks for your help once again, Mark. Your comments always give me more “food” to read more and search many things about cutting records. :-) Well, no I don’t measure my playback system. Neither the VTA. (is the VTA could produce problems at stereo image...

Re: "Brother Singer" Cutterhead
Hi, Finally, after too much experimentation, many cutterhead builts and many cuts, I ‘m very happy to announce that I have cut some music into plastic that sounds decent to my ears! :D Firstly you will hear white noise, followed by 1kHz tones and then a part of music. Here is the result of the cut: ...

Hi,
Great information guys, and amazing progress!
Congratulations Wim!
I'm truly jealous from your results!
Don't worry about the bass cutoff.. I'm sure you ll find a way...
I will be back with my "brother singer" experiments, soon.

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build
Hi, Wim, I don't know if the VTA (or VCA) design of your tube, is necessary. Did you align your stylus at 8 degrees, when you cutting? This is what myshank suggests. I don't know even if other cutting engineers can measure a 25 degree VTA at playback. I checked the i.materialise.com yesterday...

Re: "Brother Singer" Cutterhead
Hi, I try the plastic pieces for my coils. I made cone shape, as mark suggests me. I just glue them with super glue in the center of the coil former. It was difficult to attach them without any distortion but I made it. coil1.jpg cutterhead1.jpg The problem now, is to attach the brass rods to the to...

Re: Sillitoe Lathes
Thanks James... Your info is really helpful for me. Yep! I agree that the character of your cutterhead is awesome! :D However, I don't know what a "feedforward" is. Also, I would like to know how you measure this "7cm/s" at 1K. You can see my experiments in my "Brother Singer Cutterhead" thread. Tha...

Re: Sillitoe Lathes
Hi James, Well, I have to confess that this is absolute great sound!!!! Congratulations! :D Is this a non feedback cutterhead? I can't believe it!!! One question: What is your signal chain for your cuts? Is this a .wav file? Did you use only iRIAA or other EQ settings? Did you use any compression? I...

Re: "Brother Singer" Cutterhead
Hi, Thank you mark! Of course your info helps, as always... :D I remove the "spider" assembly of the drivers. spider remove.jpg Then I try to glue the 3D printed part over the coil former but it doesn't fit with accuracy. I test it, to see how it sounds. The 1kHz sine wave, was very distorted. Somet...

Re: "Brother Singer" Cutterhead
CONTINUE FROM THE PREVIOUS POST The signal I cut is: white noise + 1Khz tone on both channels + 1k only right + 1k only left + song, without any EQ, straight to the disc. The result was better than before. In the white noise part, the frequency response is look like this: f response noise NO RIAA (...

Re: "Brother Singer" Cutterhead
Hi, Well, the last days i've made a lot of tests with different combinations of my cutterhead. Firstly, I have now a sapphire stylus and PVC blanks from myshank. The big difference is that I cut the plastic (not emboss). I have to tell that I have no suction machine for the swarf, and I'm just tryin...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build
Hi, Congratulations! That sounds excellent to me! And thank you for your great information... Some queries: What about the "new stylus" ? What kind of stylus you use now and what before? Why you "re-EQ" your cutterhead? Is all about the resonances of your design? or you just compensate some frequenc...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build
Perfect! Thank you for the information. I can't find to buy this kind of airpot dashpot in europe. However, I will search in local shops here. Also, I can't unsterstand why this concave cone of your driver is a benefit. Anyway, keep us uptaded in your project. I would like to see if carbon push rods...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build
Hi Wim, Amazing work! Congratulations! Very inspiring job! :D Well, I have some queries... 1st. Where do you find the airpot dashpot? Is there any specific characteristic to choose it? Is it matters the weight of the cutterhead? How you attach it in the whole mechanism, for pulling up and lower down...
