I have a idea on this using a 8inch 240v fan. If you "funnel" the input to the fan down to say 1/2inch and the output of the fan down to say 6inch and make the input "funnel" 12inch long and the output funnel 6inch long the venturi effect should create quite a large suction like a expansion chamber ...

My friend has a large collection of 10in 78 for sale I think that they are for handcrankers.Many dirrerent lables HMV DECCA BRUNSWICK COLUMBIA ect. he also has 12in. PM me if anyone is intrested. I got 20 10in for my portable hmv handcranker. They are near perfect to avarge condition.

the sorce signal should be in phase and the the feedback signal is applied out of phase to the sorce signal. this will cancel out unwanted resonances ect just like a balanced audio setup. the head lift could be done with a 12V solanoid and a simple damper when you want to lift the head ramp the voltage to 12v slowly so it dont go with a clang and ramp it back to 0v to drop it this should give a nice smooth steady lift and drop movment. if this was fitted to a lathe all you would have...
