Re: Powering a lathe, UK

Okay, I see.

I'd prefer to make as few modifications as possible (to limit the extent to which I can mess things up!)

Are there any transcription turntables I could get which would provide sufficient torque?

Re: Powering a lathe, UK

I'm sorry, I think I have misphrased the question. I am aware of the problems regarding the turntable element, but I was thinking I could just solve that by using a UK turntable in a setup like this: http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NTYzWDgwMg==/z/8zgAAMXQNbxReGoO/$%28KGrHqVHJEgFEnN3PmMUBReGoOSyE!~~60_35.J...

Vinyl Mastering

Does anyone here make master plates for a press? How much does this service tend to cost?

Powering a lathe, UK

I have the most noob question ever. Basically, I'm in the UK, and I realise there's a whole bunch of problems regarding the motor speed of American gear. It's also very difficult to find any equipment over here. What I was thinking was that I could get a UK turntable, and attach an American overhead...

Re: T560

Yes, I've been in touch with Souri, and he explained a wee bit. He's very grouchy, though! I'm in Scotland, so shipping from Germany isn't much of a problem, and his prices for blanks seem quite good. Polycarbonate sheets are much cheaper, though. Is it correct to think that making PC blanks would ...

Re: Speed

Thank you, Bryan! This seems to be a very elegant solution.

I was also considering the possibility of fitting a cutterhead to a Technics deck (perhaps with a vacuum platter), but I'm sure this would present its own host of problems.

Thank you!

I think I'm going to need it - there don't seem to be too many lathes for sale here in Europe.

Re: Vestax VRX-2000

Yes, but it's my drunk friend who always embarrasses me when it starts spouting racist nonsense in public.

It still seems very pricey compared to Souri's machine (which by all accounts is very good). I suppose not so much to an American, what with all the shipping costs from Germany.

Re: Speed

Yes, I was going to get a K-8. If I can get a good price, I'd be tempted.

I'm in Scotland, though, so the main issue is the 50Hz to 60Hz conversion. If I'm going to have to do mods come what may, I'd rather just get a machine in Europe.

That is a very attractive price at the moment, though.

Re: Speed

Okay, I see now. So if I was to cut sped up audio at 78 for 45 playback, I presume there would be a similar problem for the higher frequencies. I think I'm going to go for a Telefunken Ela A107/1, unless a better option presents itself. This only cuts at 78, so I'll just have to modify the motor (or...

Would this problem be the same when the speed is adjusted using an analogue machine?

Speed

I'm still undergoing my hunt for my first lathe, and was concerned over speed. Obviously most of the old hardware runs at 78, with a few that do 33⅓. I'd like to do 45, but haven't seen anything capable of this (so far). Obviously there's the possibility of modifying the motor, but I'd prefer not to...
