Re: Where are people buying their blank acetates from?

Hey Thomas.
As they're also in Austria, I suggest you drop drdub a message as they'll at least be able to give you some advice on where they get their lacquers and styli from.

Re: VR - chip pickup tube with Caruso

Great news! Glad we could help. As for the cutting angle question... the stock VR head has a backwards biased cutting angle built into it (can't recall the exact degrees off the top of my head), so that's why it'll be approximately correct when the head is parallel to the blank. I still have to play...

Re: VR - chip pickup tube with Caruso

I agree with Mike. Adjust the head height control and the separate suction tube height control at the back so that the tube is almost parallel with the platter. If you need to, you could also see if you could bring the platter height up towards the head. Failing all this, you will need a new tube wi...

Re: Somebody sell Blank Discs ?

As with any plastic discs, you can't use a cutting stylus with burnishing facets - those only work with lacquer. Plastic causes them to quickly wear out and become noisy/useless. Now you say that, but MyShank now has a brand new product titled, " Diamond stylus PVC Micron Facets ". Haven't used it ...

BTW I found vacuum cleaners not good for suction and bought a pump
Agreed. What you're looking for is high flow rate rather than peak suction power.
So something like a side channel blower generally offers much more consistent swarf pickup than a domestic vacuum cleaner.

You might try adjusting the cut angle too.

Re: Is there a good reason not to cut 78 lps?

Hey thanks mate. Yup, as you thought, that is a genuine Redhead cart but (as I suspected) connected to an original 'A' tonearm by means of some type of adaptor. Would like one of those adaptors myself tbh! So, the upshot of this is that you are indeed all set up to play back microgroove 78s cut on y...

Re: Is there a good reason not to cut 78 lps?

Also , thanks for your insight, Sue. You're a credit to this group. You're more than welcome mate - thanks for the vote of confidence! It looks just like the redhead cartridge on the needles site. Hmm... interesting. I'd still like to see a close up of the cartridge and tonearm if you have the time...

Re: Is there a good reason not to cut 78 lps?

Thanks for the photos - could you take a close up of the cartridge and tonearm please? It's hard to be sure from the photo above, but the tonearm looks like the original which makes me wonder what type of cartridge is currently fitted as it doesn't appear to be a Blackhead! Would like to help you ge...

Re: Is there a good reason not to cut 78 lps?

In that case your Seeburg must have been modified at some point with a completely different tonearm as the original mounting would only accept the first generation of Pickering 'Blackhead' carts. Would love to see some photos if you have time. And yes, from your description, it sounds as though it's...

Re: Is there a good reason not to cut 78 lps?

Also, some 78 jukes need an eccentric runout groove to activate the auto-changer mechanism True enough, but not many. All the Golden Age boxes from the mid-30s onward that I've had experience with don't need it to trip the cancel relay. Certainly the mechanism in the Seeburg Library Unit doesn't as...

Re: Is there a good reason not to cut 78 lps?

Hi, 78 rpm records have a much wider 'coarse' groove than that of an LP or 45 rpm single's 'micro-groove'. Your Seeburg will be fitted with a coarse groove stylus which is around 2.5-3 mil tip diameter. Whereas your VR has a cutting stylus designed for micro groove, which is around 1 mil. In other w...

Re: Technics SP-10 mkII : Max Weight stylus

Just to confirm that your SP10 is a mkII (or possibly a mkIII), correct? If so then, from the symptoms you describe, it sounds like you're significantly down on torque from level it should be at. First thing I'd do is have someone who knows what they're doing service the electronics in both the turn...

Use distilled water to rinse them.

What's your current pump and, aside from the excessive noise it now makes, does it provide enough suction for your needs?
