Re: Lockdown turntable and lathe - a DIY project
Hey, not bad, David. Could you share embossing particulars, like 'angle of lean,' and whether you use heat and/or lubricant? I do see what you mean by 'spaciousness,' but the two tracks do seem to sum to mono okay, yet listening selectively to left and right doesn't pick out any distinct differences...

Re: Lockdown turntable and lathe - a DIY project
Fantastic, Mark! Forget Corvette Stingray differentials; you guys have proven that slow-stepping works. The DigiKey boards are quite reasonable too.

Re: Lockdown turntable and lathe - a DIY project
Thanks for that, Mark; I'll look for a standalone stepper driver-thing that uses that chip. Ought to be one out there. I expect this is similar to a driver I bought a couple of years ago, claiming much the same features and performance. Yes, a bit of whine between tracks is no big deal to me. 60(!) ...

Re: Lockdown turntable and lathe - a DIY project
Hi, Mark; no, my initial test was not a real-world recording situation. And you're right, with both motors running fast, the torque ripple will clearly be in the audible range, and from two sources, too! They may even 'beat' or heterodyne, who knows? Probably best to couple the motors to the differe...

Re: Lockdown turntable and lathe - a DIY project
Good work, David! What's more, you do a great job of documenting and explaining what you've done. A question and a comment, if I may. First, where did you obtain the drive belt for your recording turntable? It almost looks like surgical tubing; is this something you purchase with a precision splice,...

I'd like one, Tasos. Can you accept PayPal or do you have another suggestion for money transfer?

Re: New Embossing Stylus!
Hey, Tasos, what are we listening to on the audio portion of that YouTube video? Wasn't sure if it was music or an old Internet dial-up connection sound.

Re: Cutting with a diamond cnc engraving bit?
Excellent report, Juba. A few questions, if I might: 1. Is your grinding fixture really hand-held as it appears in the photos? Would it benefit from a more solid and precision-indexed holder for the diamond bit? 2. Can you link us to a source for the diamond engraving bits that you have found most a...

Re: Cutting with a diamond cnc engraving bit?
Quick question on your head, Juba, mainly that V-shaped bracket that secures the stylus holder and is held in place by those two threaded standoffs. Is that a loose coupling (nuts not tight or rubber grommets) or do the screws simply flex? I'm assuming that a stiff wire goes from the stylus holder t...

Re: KNOP lathe DIY build
I tend to agree. In its intended application, as a driver for a loudspeaker (of sorts), the plate is screwed to the cone/diaphragm and moves that plate and what it's screwed to simply against the inertia of the magnet, etc. mass. I like better the idea of securing the high-mass element, the magnet, ...

Re: Ma Rainey's Black Bottom Movie Lathe
Hey, Soulbear, Good catches, all. A man after my own heart, finding time/place errors in films; I do love finding incorrect light switches and AC mains outlets. It's even possible to tell which "Hollywood" films are actually shot, on the cheaper, in Canada. I do believe, however, that suction was us...

Re: Cutting with a diamond cnc engraving bit?
Hi, Juliano, very nice YouTube video. Are you actually cutting (removing material) or doing very aggressive embossing? It didn't look as if there was enough chip/swarf coming out of the groove. However, my experience has been with commercial lacquer mastering discs, hot stylus and a vacuum; perhaps ...
