Re: Digital vs Analog Masters
Not all of the lacquer magic is passed onto the stampers - no matter how good the lab work. Some of that is because the lacquer master is a living organic substance where the metal mother and stampers are not. There are people that insist that acetate tape preserves the warmth of the recording bett...

Re: Digital vs Analog Masters
Does the average person who buys a record have the ability to tell analog sources from digital? (Paraphrased) There's lots of long-in-the-tooth ENGINEERS who can't tell nevermind their consumers. Sorry - but those guys who can't tell should probably not be wasting their time mastering onto vinyl in...

Why Consumers and Engineers Don't Get Along
For whoever is still on e.g. Steve Hoffman forums or Audiokarma or Home Recording or BSNPubs or Tapeheads or any one of a dozen other similar consumer/fanboy oriented sites - there's a reason engineers get attacked on consumer sites - defend ourselves and then get thrown off their boards for doing s...

Accidents that Ended Up Staying in the Show
We're in our final weeks of rehearsals for the Fall Musical and we're doing No No Nanette (1971) with the original Ralph Burns arrangements. On this particular playback that came with the rights to the show (one disc is the OBC and the other disc is a very close soundalike thereof - tracks only so y...

Homemade Fiber Records by my Grampa from my Dad's Loft
As you all know, my father passed away at 77 three years ago next month after his nearly 40-year battle with Crohn's and Colitis. He owned a cottage up at the lake around three hours drive from the house - and between me being out here and my sister's recuperating from her car wreck (not serious jus...

Re: 8 sided cardboard insert for packaging 14" lacquers
Lacquer companies contract with cardboard companies to make them custom. I would find out where they have them made and then ask if they take small orders of unprinted boxes (as all the ones for the lacquer companies will have transco or Apollo on them)

If you are still there find out if Len Horowitz has any spare time for you to drop in.
He's in Culver City between the old MGM lot and Fox.

Re: Here's One for All the Math Geniuses
1. OC ÷ IC = velocity ratio change from start to finish 2. RPM of original tape machine 3. starting LV (PI X Hub_Diameter X Tape_RPM) / 60 4. tape thickness 5. groove pitch OK..... Since the tape spools from low diameters to high, and the disc runs from high to low, the two will cancel out once you...

Here's One for All the Math Geniuses
For all you math geniuses out there - here's one very few people can solve. 1. You have a tape originally recorded at a Constant Angular Velocity (CAV/rim drive) (i.e. recorded in RPM instead of IPS e.g. Living Letters tapes from the 60s) 2. You don't have a CAV tape deck so you are playing it back ...

Kid asked me over the weekend about 33 for 45 cutting, told me he was on the forum here (don't know his handle here though) so I told him I would link him here and to the other 33-for-45 playback threads on the board as well. There's a couple references above to other quasi-related threads that cove...

Re: Digital vs Analog Masters
If a customer is not prepared to pay you for aligning the tape machine to their tape, then they probably shouldn't bother with tape as the source medium. If they are not prepared to pay for disk mastering, then vinyl is probably not the right medium for them. And as previously stated in the Dealing...

Part 2 of 2 And before you talk about `how do I know' - I can tell you that I had the reverse experience - having to learn enough about scoring and performance in order to explain to musicians and producers that x y or z was not executable as written with the current technology. Little background: I...

Re: Dealing with customers who cannot deal with pressing pla
Part 1 of 2 because I was a touring musician myself so there is a certain degree of mutual understanding. Or more often than not - MIS understanding since you are both coming to technology from a music viewpoint anymore than the few times a group of engineers tried to make a band so they wouldn't ha...

Re: Cutter on Misterogers Neighborhood is a Presto?
One side OI and another IO is not for pantographing or dubbing (I think pantographing was only used for cylinders), it's to match fidelity at disc change time. Which is just what I said - whether the end purpose was for dubbing onto LP or not is immaterial - but the handful of e.g. 16-inch or 17-1/...
