Cutterhead repair / rebuild service

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Hi Rolandjays,

Not unless I win the lottery, if I ever did I would invest some serious moolah into a stereo design

At present I am able to do repairs and rebuilds of mono cutters...

I can make coil bobbins, wind coils, replace missing screws, re-tapp worn threads, replace damping blocks + brass fittings, replace cloth wire, remove oxides + debris, re-set knife edges, re-magnetise or replace magnets

I also do things like anti static treat completed cutters before closing them up

I do all the work myself - I dont outsource to anyone

I use only the highest quality materials available - I dont cut corners or make substitutions

Well, I am still waiting on supplies to arrive... :(

While waiting, I thought I might turn out an example of the teflon coil bobbins that I make for you trolls to see...

Next to the white teflon coil bobbin that I have made is an original presto1c bobbin

Shaving the outter diameter and spindle of the teflon bobbin just a little more would have made it identical in size to the original

This bobbin only took about 5 minutes to make - when supplies arrive ill take my sweet time to ensure dimensions are correct then ill continue onto winding them

"Thanks opcode66"

GOOD NEWS TROLLS

I've learnt that the remaining of the stock that ive been waiting on has finally arrived in the country and will clear customs this week

Included in the stock is around 22 kilometers of enameled copper wire ranging from 30 gauge through to 40 gauge

One it has arrived - I will be winding the orders I have then I will be taking 2 weeks off to catch up on some much needed R&R

Upon return in the new year I will make contact with those who have sought my assistance and we will get things rolling along...

Hi studiorp,

The coils pictured outside of the heads are brand new voice coils that are ready to be installed into another head... (They are the same as the coils that are installed in the heads)

2 coils for presto 1C / 1D heads

1 coil for 5C heads

Ok, but why 2 coils for 1C or 1D ? It's a mono head, no stereo ...

One for the top half of the armature, the other flipped 180 degrees for the bottom half of the armature. Less distortion, more efficiency, iirc.
