Installing new stylus on vinylrecorder

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Installing new stylus on vinylrecorder

Hi Trolls, i'm waiting for a reshaped stylus for my vinylrecorder, i've installed a new stylus multiple times but the last stylus i got reshaped from souri cutted very noisy records from the first time. According to souri it's a beginner fault and i killed the stylus, the tip was defect. Are there any particular precaution i should have besides not touching the diamond and only holding it trough the heating wires? Really appreciate your help. Happy cutting

Well, I've been down that road as well. However, I chalk it up to a manufacturing irregularity. I've had defective Styli show up from Souri and from Apollo / Transco. Once in a blue moon, but, it happens.

I mean, that's the only option. Send it back to him and have him reshape. Otherwise you're out a whole styli.

I recently purchased a styli from Apollo for embossing. It didn't work and likewise I couldn't image that I damaged it. It's really frustrating given the lack of styli available to public.

Really? I guess I should just check with my local guitar center next time I'm looking to buy a cutting sylus. Seriously, can you list any other companies in the states besides Apollo that sell Sapphire, Ruby or Diamond styli???? I would love to know

The Shank, I dont like where this is going... You present yourself as an expert in this matter and I don't have time for a debate so I will agree to disagree with you about the availability of cutting stylus to the public. To answer your first question, I am looking for a long a shank sapphire or ruby stylus. To repeat my question, can you list a company in the states besides Apollo that sells Styli? And if you have any for sell let me know already...jeez.

At first, I've never present myself as an expert... I do my job, I know my job, and I try to answer questions when I'm able to do it.
There is absolutely no debate (btw about what?).
I have some people around me doing test with sapphire and rubin stylus and not from Apollo. I think those people when ready will come here to let people know if the product is ok and reliable.

You were talking about stylus, not precisely about stylus for laquers, this is why I told you that....

And, if you want to cut plastic : you need diamond and nothing else. All other materials will break the tip or edges, will die too young, will create background noise, will give you a bad sound, bad chips... etc etc.
You can maybe have results... but not as good than diamonds stylus.

In Usa, you have Todd (opcode) who can supply diamond stylus, over Europe, there is Vinylike and MyShank. If others sources... be careful.

whoa whoa, no need to get hostile.
here's who I know providing styli in the US (as that seemed to be your direct question):

steel/tungsten for cutting and embossing: Jerry Morris (morrisjer on the forums here)
and available on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Record-lathe-cutter-presto-record-in-stylus-needle-styli-rek-o-kut-recorder-/281255271864?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item417c1eddb8

tungsten for embossing: John Farmer "Good Turn Embossing Styli"
search for his thread on here for contact info

Todd/Opcode 66: www.deepgroovesmastering.com
diamond stylus for neumann and presto cutter heads

and you know of Apollo.
those are the only US suppliers that I know of.

as Steven/Myshank said, vinylike and myshank are the only EU places, so check all these places out, do some research, and speak to the people making the styli. They're into their craft, and cover a wide range of needs. Some do this is a hobby, others as a job, and others still have been the pro standard for many many years, so there will be differences.

I feel bad for diverting this thread...

Like I mentioned in my initial comment I am embossing and I couldn't get a recently purchased ruby cutting stylus from Apollo to do the trick and stated that it's frustrating not having too many other companies around to buy stylus from. However in some peoples opinion there are an abundance of companies which is the debate I am referring to. Next, I have done my research on cutting stylus (even when it means i had to sift through so many threads like this!). I apreciate the links. I own sapphire, ruby, tungsten, steel stylus. My question in response to being told that stylus are sold "everywhere" is where I can find long shank sapphire or ruby (not diamond because I am EMBOSSING) styli besides Apollo (preferably in the states)?
