We had one of these behemoths at CBS Whitfield St.

I never could figure out where you were supposed to put the washing!

Having said that, a lot of hits were cut on that machine.

Big Al Corbeth cut the worlds supply of 'Tubular Bells' 25 or 30 sets of lacs.

Also 'Close to the Edge' by Yes about 20 times as well as numerous others.

Very long tape path on the deck with sliding preview/pb heads. Fancy!

Used to be fond of swarf burn ups as well !

When I was buying and selling used cutting equipment in the 80s and 90s I sometimes handled Lyrec lathe systems. The first one was the mono one at IBC in the Joe Meek room. Some lads in South London bought it and Sean set it up for them, but what happened to it after that I have no idea! I remember it was great fun getting it down to street level in the lift

I had three complete Lyrecs through my hands, together with a Lyrec preview Tape player as well as a multitude of Ortofon units.

I cannot remember where the second one came from, but I am guessing CBS at Whitfield Street. That was one of the few that had an intact set of parts to automatically create the locked groove for autochangers.
I restored the whole thing for our own facility and did demonstrate the lock groove, just out of interest. Eventually it was bought and shipped to Japan.

The third one came from somewhere in Wales and I completely restored that one for a customer. He wanted it to look classy, so I had the top plate completely stripped to the brass and then clear lacquered.
The covers were all sprayed black and baked to give a lasting finish.

I wonder if the blog subject was where one of those three ended up?
