VR Torque Problem with Warped Blanks

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

VR Torque Problem with Warped Blanks

Hello Guys,

Recently I had a problem on my VR with 2mm coloured blanks. I use Technics SL1200 but it does not have enough torque on the outside when the blank is warped.

I have a lot of flutter with high weight on the cutterhead. The VR is calibrated with MyShank's guide and worked well until now. I tried to warm to 40° without good results.

Now I change the Technics with Stanton ST150 and I have the same problem with flutter on the outside.

Can you help me to find the solution?

I want to build 4mm of steel platter to put it over the Technics platter.

Have you similar problems?

Turntable is flat, cutterhead is parralel to blank, but I've the same flutter on Technics and Stanton.

Why?

The problem is only on the outside. In the center of the records I've no flutter

Those turntables sometimes don't have enough torque.
Souri's 'Precision Plate' can help.
or get an SP-10 :)

or
Cut a shallower groove:

Cut with lower weight - less than 10 grams - go as light as you can while still getting nice grooves.
Cut with the discs at a lower temperature - 36 centigrade. (this is also about depth of groove)
Cut with stylus heat ON, but at the minimum setting (this is also about depth of groove)

Buy blanks that are more flat - no warps!!

Whose blanks are you cutting?

Cheers!

I doubt this will help but might be worth a try anyway:

I know lots of people cutting 12" on a VR / technics and having the same problem. Lubricant might help.... but more likely a much more powerful turntable/motor will be the answer.

disclaimer - I just know technics quite well, but i dont cut records with one personally!

Blanks of Myshank seems to be lighter than Souri's blanks. Although I need to do more cuts with ms blanks, they seem to have less to none flutter.

Another option is, leave a 2cm space on the outer rim uncut. This works fine.

Hello guys,
thank you for your answer...I cut only MS blanks, for me are the best...I think the my problem is the 1200's platter. I saw that is not flat when rotate...
So I decided to build an external steel plate of 5mm and 14" of size...

yeah Id suggest going as light as possible, and leave as much space as you can before the track while still looking normal
