Cutting a recording stylus

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

mate i just tried that. it's hopeless unless you want to spend 8 hours for a sapphire. i tried everything believe me. it's not worth it.
we are talking about a tip of 0.003 mm that's how fine it has to be....
if you want you can buy my faceting machine if you don't believe me..
cheers

also the edges have to be polished like a mirror. i even tried with the purest sapphire you can get optical grade and could not made it work after 4 weeks fucking around every day..

what kind of faceting machine do you have? Just of an interest...

Maybe you are using not good materials for faceting, finishing etc...

Anyway it is done by a human being so it should be possible. Of course using right things sometime makes it work.

polymetric is the company.
nah mate i tried the grade 1 optical sapphire that's as good as it gets.
i alsi tried natural ones.
Diamond is cut with different machines and i reckon the also cut our sapphire with that kind of machine.
10 times bigger and more accurate.
Of course it's possible to do with the right equipment.
but even then there is a reason why 95 % of the stones are made in thailand or china. if it takes 4-5 hours to make a stone it's not worth it anymore. Look i did toolsteel and the quality of the cut was like i don't wanna say the name but yeah far from acceptable for me.
Anything which makes a lot of background noise is not good enough for me...
