Feedback cutterhead for T-560

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Feedback cutterhead for T-560

Hello,

Could anyone share experience about the difference in output between cuts with regular vs. feedback cutterhead on a T-560? Thanks

I own a Souri's lathe since 2012, have about 250+ hrs of experience. Asking Souri about a feedback cutterhead since couple of years, but he says there's no demand and therefore no production

Happy to share experience about my config and cuts, if someone has any issue with a t-560 or just out of curiosity

Thanks

I am regularly also asking for both the feedback cutterhead and the automatic groove distance controller, but same reply. Not enough demand. But let's keep pushing for it.

I dont know if I believe it since I've asked too and he has said the same! I believe... he has another system or something new in the works so he is not building his old stuff right now... but who knows...

This is exactly my same question. Is there such a big quality improvement? Which is the difference?

I have no technical figures to share unfortunately, but the only thing I will say is that I've had the feedback head and amp from the start and haven't used it in years.
It just doesn't work that well and if you cut a pink noise track without the feedback amp in the chain, then create a input eq curve to flatten the head frequency response, you achieve better results.

Hi,

I don't own a VR, but had a question. Have you ever tried using the feedback system and adding additional EQ to correct the response? It would seem that even if the feedback as supplied is not able to fully flatten the response, it should kill much of the main system resonance, improve distortion, and make the head less affected by the changes in cutting media. The corrective EQ needed should be less aggressive with feedback engaged as well. Or was it just too finicky and/or unstable?

Mark

I do not have a VR either, but I've done my experiments, and the results are not compensating, that kind of feedback is not reliable

Agreed - the type of feedback system employed by the VR head I own (basically an Ortofon Concorde DJ cartridge interfaced with the torque tube) doesn't perform consistently.
If its main function is to counteract the mechanical resonance, then it only does so in an inconsistent way, thereby making it almost unusable.

what I realized is that there is a lot of interference from one channel to another, maybe using a cartridge for each cone, attached to the cone rod and not to the torque tube, the results could be much better

A friend and I are in the process of making an automatic groove speed controller. Stay tuned!
