Presto 6N Feedscrew mounting problem
Hello,
i have a question and i hope some one out there can help.
I got a feed screw recently and upon installing it on my Presto 6N i noticed that it would not rotate properly and spin smooth.
Upon taking it off to inspect it. I noticed the mounting holes where the cones go are really big compared to the other feed screws i have.
With the feed screw hole
really big its causing the crank cone to bottom out and when that happens the feed screw is not centered and does not spin and rotate smoothly.
Has any one had any problems like this and if so, How did you fix this?
i included a picture of the feed screw with bigger hole (right)next to one with a smaller hole(left).

Re: Presto 6N Feedscrew mounting problem
Is that the double groove screw that i just sent you? I noticed that that happened on one of the seven 6ns i have at the studio, because the clutch cone on that one is smaller than the rest. And you are right, the holes are a little deeper on those than they should be for best practice. On most lathes it doesnt matter because the cones are larger.
Anyway, email me and ill have you send it back to my machinist (ill refund shipping), and he can take a small amount off material off that end, which will make the conical hole smaller so that it works. But email me a photo of the right side (crank side) of the screw while its installed so we know you have enough crank space to go a little further in.

Yeah its the double groove one you sent the other day.
I will send it back to you and send you a email with some pictures of the screw installed in the lathe.
Thanks!

Re: Presto 6N Feedscrew mounting problem
I had zero idea that the clutch cone would/could differ. Good to know. Also good to know mine is the typical size because my feed screw worked like a champ, no issues.piaptk wrote:Is that the double groove screw that i just sent you? i would have thought Presto would make all the Clutch cones the same during manufacturing but i guess there are some rare ones the came out the factory.soeffingodly wrote:I had zero idea that the clutch cone would/could differ.
