VinylRecorder Technics 1200/1210 Mk2 to GR upgrade

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

VinylRecorder Technics 1200/1210 Mk2 to GR upgrade

For anyone thinking of minimising 12” outer edge potential wow/flutter issues and associated anxiety, then I can recommend swapping the standard Mk2 deck in the configuration for a GR (which has around 50% more torque than the Mk2)

Like others here, I’ve sometimes found it a challenge to maintain optimal heat/head pressure using the standard Mk2 setup, so I bit the bullet and bought a GR.

Now, I’m not that technically orientated, but from the available details online of both models, it looked like the ‘footprint’ of the GR is very similar to the Mk2. The cups on the bottom of the GR which accommodate the feet are slightly smaller in diameter and located very slightly out of sync with the Mk2

The lugs on the lathe platform are easily unscrewed, and it was a straightforward job to take them to a local workshop and have a few mm shaved off them, a bit at a time, checking the fit back on the lathe platform each time, so as not to remove too much!

I re-fitted the lugs and re-calibrated – all now good! Only difference I can detect (apart from more torque) is that the top surface of the deck is around 5mm higher than before, but there’s enough capacity on the cutting head gear to accommodate that and calibrate as usual

Sorry, I should have been more precise. I'm referring to upgrading to the Technics 1200GR .. https://www.technics.com/uk/products/grand-class/direct-drive-turntable-system-sl-1200gr.html

Agreed, I did the same conversion, only had new feet turned so it sat the same height as the original 1210,
