why are pole pieces laminated on mono heads?

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Hi,

To avoid eddy current losses at high frequencies. Not sure its always really required, but it doesn't hurt. Way back, when John B. was working on his Grampian head clone (search the archives here for more details on that project), the first pass version had solid pole pieces and it did affect the response.

Hi thanks, makes sense. I’ve noticed some heads have solid poles but most laminated. Since it would be more work to build and therefore cost to manufacture, I figured there must be a reason for it.
