Hi!
Do you know if these sewing needles are suitable for cutting/embossing on polycarbonate plastic?
(the leather needles has triangular shape)

Hello, I don't know all the sawing needless avalaible, but I think the point is not sharp enough(too big tip radius) And they bend easy when/if heated.
If you have a microscope or alike, have a look at a the point of a record player reproduction needle and the one you intend to use for recording. recordig stylii has to be sharper than repro.Hope trhis helps.

Hi, I appreciate your reply..
I know that the cutting styli has to be sharper and with smaller radius than the repro stylus.
I'm asking this because I saw that lot of guys on youtube use sewing needles for their home made lathes. Unfortunately, I don't have any microscope to see the difference of the tip. (I hope I will buy one of those USB microscope next week to see the difference).
Anyway, where can I buy these Jerry's steel cone styli ? (ebay link doesn't work)
thanks in advance.

Re: sewing needles
search in ebay for something like "record lathe stylus" (I've got no relation with the seller)
With a cheap USB microscope of 500X you can make photos like this:
reproducing stylus
and sewing needle(the sharpest I could find, maybe from a sewing machine)
My microscope was around 50 euros and came with very cool measuring software. but the stand was almost useless. I mounted it on a toy microscope and worked a lot better:
Now Ive got a bigger one, but I still findin this very usefull sometimes

Re: sewing needles
Hi,
Well, these are very interesting pics. But, as I know even the sewing needles has numbers, that represents the size of the tip.
As you can see in my first pics, there are numbers. (3-7). Also, the needles for leather has triangular shape as I can see that with naked eye.
Anyway, thanks for your help. I will post some pics of the tip when I get this usb microscope. (I hope next week).
Cheers

Re: sewing needles
A sewing needle off the shelf will never be as good a tool as something made for the purpose. Even if it works once, the standards for sewing needle tips are not nearly as closely monitored as cutting styli. Save a headache and buy proper styli.

Thanks for your reply.
Well, what do you mean about "proper styli"? Something like that?
Also, I 've seen some guys that can emboss with a old playback gramophone styli or sapphire styli. Are all the needles can match in any DIY cutterhead?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, I beleive that there are great! But, I don't have any cutting mashine like Presto or Rekokut.. Just my DIY lathe and I don't know if I can use them on polycarbonate.
Ok, it's cheap enough to try them.
Do you use any heating coil on them ?
Cheers

Re: sewing needles
If I'm correct that's in Fahrenheit. I heard people heating up to 140 but I imagine ymmv.
I wouldn't heat a steel stylus for for fear of heating the head and possibly melting something. I was told the best to heat the materiel if your embossing.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: sewing needles
I'd like to add that using sewing needles won't produce a standard goove, but maybe can reproduce some (lo lo lo-fi) sound, even if the repro stylus rides the botton of the groove instead of the walls. Can bring some inexpensive fun, but using a proper stylus is lot better.
Re: sewing needles
Well, that's a pic that you can see the tip of my dusty reproducing needle and the one of my sewing needle.
As I can see there is a big difference in the tip... But is this sewing needle good enough to start experimenting?
P.S. that's a picture of 20x magnification (just got the usb microscope and that's my first try of the picture, I ll try a closer look later)
Thanks in advance.
