Polishing and repair of the stylus, the new project

Anything goes! Inventors! Artists! Cutting edge solutions to old problems. But also non-commercial usage of record cutting. Cost- effective, cost-ineffective, nutso, brilliant, terribly fabulous and sometimes fabulously terrible ideas.

Polishing and repair of the stylus, the new project

Everyone knows that I sell old Soviet stylus, as it turns out they were of very poor quality because they are meant for cutting ray film. Many of you made sure in low quality and I want to try to give them a second life. I'm going to to try to to sharpen the tip to 2-3 microns, I have the equipment for work with precious stones, and all the necessary appliances. I recently finished a short course of study and some skills to work with precious stones I received.
This is equipment that is available for me.
Best regards, Alexey Sobolev.

The problem is that I do not have the cutting heads a working, but I have ,not working cutting head with the help of which I can check silence of the cut groove. Today I was able to do a test on a black PVC myshank. The first incision was very quiet as diamond, but the second and the third had a hiss and crackle.
Below you see links to several test.

For any help and advice will be very grateful!!
In the coming days I will try sharpen a few stylus and start experimenting with angles and sharpening. All videos of tests I will publish
Best regards, Alexey Sobolev.

Why your cutting head isn't working ? You had a Sc-99 once ?

Before to cut, do you use a sort of antistatic solution to apply on surface disc ? This help reduce the hiss...

With diamonds, there absolutely no noise, I haven't seen that result on the both video. the test #1 is noisy too.
You won't have good results on plastic with sapphire/rubin.

How do you check the tips and edges after grinding, what kind of microscope?

With cutting head Sc-99 is all right))) I took it that would establish a mono head, because stylus in the Sc-99 is not insert)

Steven, I have two microscopes 280 and 360 times. I ordered several measuring USB microscopes with different magnification of 200, 400, 500, 800 and 1000 times. Maybe I did not succeed, but it's worth it!)) The test made not acute stylus, if my memory does not fail, the radius of tip 15 microns. If we remove burnishing facet and make radius 3 micron , the stylus will receive a diamond shape. I do not see reasons for the failure !?

What are the main reasons why Ruby does not give the same quiet groove like a diamond if I repeat a diamond shape?

Plastic pcf etc. is a bad material, corundum [sapphire, ruby] oxides are too soft, but possibly a diamond, but the effect will be poor, big noise, there's nothing you can do about it, who says otherwise let them do the recording on you tube and prove that it will be great ...
Only lacquer master will cut right through your knives with ruby, sapphire, any other material or plate covered with wax, paraffin industrial
I checked it , all badly, damage the knife and the time ...

First photo of corundum, sapphire, ruby molecular structure
Second photo molecular structure of the diamond
Plastic thirds photo enlarged microscopic structure is not consistent
relax, plastic is very bad material for cutting :!:
it can only press in,

polycarbonate, PVC etc.
Only nitro lacquer has a coherent structure
Please do the actual recording of a knife with a ruby on the board 12 inches pcv and embed real movie on you tube for 20 minutes, wants to see and hear ....

Hey, you just say things you don't know dude... And you assume things you definitely don't know... And it's not the first time.
I think you have definitely no experience or with diamond or with plastic.

I can find here more people than you think using plastic and diamond with perfect unmodulated groove, no background noise... And you are just saying the opposite.

please.... stop.

Polycarbonate a very hard material, even a diamond can easily break. At the moment, I am doing the slope on PVC Steven myshank, and also very good for cutting the PET material.

Steven, you are a great professional in his work, and to argue with you, I have no right.
The fact is that I got already perfect quiet groove, have long to experiment, not everyone wants to spend as much time to configure the desired angle and spoil the material for testing and tuning. In any case, I will go ahead and try to to get some results.
