Re: Testing of the Batchelder - Grampian replica
From what I understand the shape of the first coil as not quite the same as the stock Grampian coil. I have not seen either coil, but if you look at the shape from the picture below (the head is actually upside down), you see the coil turns 90 degrees on each end and humps over the torsion rods. If the humps are taller that the original, some total length of wire is lost going up and down on each end. So you end up loosing that distance x 4 worth of wire for each coil. Also if the coil hump is wider the same is true about length loss. Which means you don't have the same number of coils.dubcutter89 wrote:
In theory the best coil for a moving iron head has lowest possible resistance and max. inductance! Together with a very high resonance this should make a head that is flat vs velocity - that is what you normally want..
Yes, I should have posted that.dubcutter89 wrote: The numbers for version 2 would be interesting!
1khz test cut:
4.456V
367.2ma
-10db on my Phase Linear 400 power amp.
This resulted in a cut that was about 1dB hotter than the STR100 test reference.

Well now that the link is working to the 2nd cut .
I would like people's opinion on comparing it to the original grampian , presto , audax and any other mono heads .
Do you think it is better ? Not as good ? Equal? Ect ....
If you got a record from me would you be satisfied with the results ?

I also want to point out that the 7.5Khz bump may be able to be toned down with thicker dampening fluid as Mark noted. Or a touch of EQ could be applied. All in all though it's pretty damn good!ROLANDJAYS wrote:Do you think it is better ? Not as good ? Equal? Ect ....

I think you've done an amazing job! (great work to Bryan and Mark too).
I would be satisfied with those results.
I don't have a Grampian or other mono head.
Do you have an idea of when these will be available?
Cheers

Re: Testing of the Batchelder - Grampian replica
before I forget , id like to thank
len , bryan , markrob, kris , mike , and anybody who has ever posted anything about the Grampian head, because I used it for my project.
now heads are ready , I just need to put them together. which doesn't take long , a few days per one.
with this new material the price is going up.
to give you an idea , the cost of this material is 50$ per pound at a 50 pound minimum .
contact me for details if your serious.
and if you get one , test it as soon as you can, don't wait 3 months and then call me . if your not going to use it right away , I would suggest waiting.
there not going anywhere.
thanks

Re: Testing of the Batchelder - Grampian replica
I'll just drop this in here since there was previous discussion about resizing a long shank to a short shank for the Grampians....what is the length of the shank on a short and long stylus? I have some used NOS in both short/long shanks, but have no idea the actual length that should be used in the Grampian as I've never purchased a new one. I have a Grampian Type C I'm getting ready to mount.
Re: Testing of the Batchelder - Grampian replica
Hi,
In the Presto 1D manual, the stylus length is called out as 47/64" +/- 1/64"
The Grampian manual indicated 5/8" No tolerance given.
I'm not sure if these are the current dimensions that Apollo uses, but it should be close.

Re: Testing of the Batchelder - Grampian replica
These lengths are overall, correct? I have a couple used ones that have been resharpened, that's why I was wondering about just the shank but will take these measurements to see what is close to use in the Grampian for testing. Thanks!markrob wrote:Hi,

Just wanted to put this topic back in circulation. I visited epicenterbryans shop and got a close look at the thing. Never seen a grampian in person before but my first thought was holy cow is that thing itty bitty or what? Dude put in some serious work on that thing. Buy one and support this guy!
