Which 1200/1210?

Hi!

I am new to cutting and going to get a T560, I have been researching for some time but one thing I can't seem to work out is whether certain 1200/1210's are better than others for cutting with the T560?

For example, a 90's 1200 I am looking at fully serviced by Technics, would this work or is there a better alternative? https://reverb.com/item/18456993-technics-sl-1200mk2-with-shure-m35x-cartridge

Are new models better for any reason? Mechanically I cant find any differences, but wondered if anyone with experience could help? I cant afford a SP10 or 15 so will be 1200 or 1210.

Thanks!

I understand that it’s the 1200/1210 mk2 that should be used

Looks good, though no mention of the platter. There's a lot of bad 1200's out there, especially the platters. Maybe from people carring them under their arms to parties or whatever. Runout on the platter can cause a lot of problems...

If you're going to spend that much, you might as well save a little longer for an SP10 mkii if you can. They do appear at sensible prices (circa £500) now and then!

Has anybody ever tried the new Technics 1200GR or even 1200G.

The GR is supposed to have a bit more torque than the old ones - so I guess it should work?

Hi Dr. Dub,

is the same low torque of the SL1200 mk2. Little torque and very expensive. The only advantage I noticed in the Technics GR / G is the stability of the plate, perfectly aligned and with low noise.
I believe the new SL 1200 MK7 are the same thing too.

I did some tests with some Super OEM, the ones that had the best torque response so far were:
1 - Numark TT500 (yes, it has more constant torque than the TTX USB)
2 - Stanton STR8.150
3 - Numark TTX USB

I'd like to test Denon VL 12 Prime, but I'll have to buy one for that.

Cheers,

According to Technics specs it should be:

torque (1.5 kgf·cm or 0.15 N·m for SL-1200MK2)
torque (3.3 kgf·cm for SL-1200G & SL-1200GAE)
torque (2.2 kgf·cm for SL-1200GR)
torque (1.8 kgf·cm for SL-1200MK7)

We had a Denon VL12 Prime in use here - it lasted for half a year then problems with the motor arised (not holding the 33rpm anymore, we are back on a 1200MK2 right now...)

Thanks for the help, so going by the past few replies, is there other turntables then like the Numark or Denon VL12 that might be a consideration rather than getting a cheaper 1200/1200?

Hey drdub,

is your SL1200MK2 modified with the Dub Cutter torque mod? If so, any issues with it?

Thanks,
Bob

Yeah we did the resistor mod multiple times now.
No issues on normal cuts - only when the blank is bent we have some wow.
We're in the process of fully converting to SP10s right now to avoid the 1210 problems altogether.

Thanks! I will not bother with mods then.

Hi drdub, yes... I run a GR and there are no wow & flutter issues after doing this,
I did have to make new mounting feet for the VR as the recessses are not the same as a normal 1200 / 1210
