VMS 70 eBay

Just a heads up to all the Trolls out there in the marketplace, I was trying to gather some information about this VMS 70 listing on eBay (I made the mistake of bidding first (and I guess the seller did not like my bid, but it was the same price that veterans of this site said they would feel comfortable paying for this item) and the seller will not answer any questions, period. I was going to make another offer if the seller could provide clarification, but he has flatlined. This seller seems like he may be related to Souri. Lol.
Just wanted to let everyone know as I can't imagine trying to coordinate a transaction with a seller like this overseas and I d hate to see someone get burned. Here is the link to the auction.

Ive messaged the seller a few times about the VMS with no response either. The seller also seemed to sell another VMS70 around a year ago as well. Not sure if it was the same one or a different one.

It has been discussed here few times..scroll down the older classified ads and you'll find it. They answered me few times but very broken English and very little info.

Thank you. It's kind of amazing, but minutes after I made this post, my questions got answered. Strange coincidents.

It appears that the lyrec motor is 50hz. Is there an easy remedy to run that on 60hz as in USA?

When someone buys an item from them via eBay they at the point seem to decide it was listed too low because it was sold. then it is resisted for more $. Happened with the SMT press. sold for 15k. but refused to sell and relisted(shows sold friday for 25k now)

That VMS70 is in good shape considering. And to my knowledge the only 70 available...

I noticed that, and another troll also mentioned that he thought it might be the same lathe that was for sale last year.

I am not sure how big a deal the 50hz is? Anyone know?

I am not sure how he could operate that way and keep 100% positive feedback. Amazing.

If you cancel an auction, can feedback be left permanently? I thought it becomes unavailable and therefore doesn't show or count under the sellers feedback history.

50hz is a big deal as we discussed on the phone. You can't use a European Lyrec platter motor here in the USA. There are off the shelf options, but they are expensive. Most large motors and motor contols circuits are not made to drive a motor with a lot of torque at such slow speeds.

if someone in the states does get this.. i'll swap them a 60hz lyrec motor for the 50hz lyrec motor :)

Am I missing something here? Isn't it just a matter of providing a source of 50 Hz AC mains to the lathe (220?/ 120??Vac)? I assume the lathe runs on single phase power. That's not a big deal. You might even able to run the bulk of the lathe electronics at 60hz AC mains and only provide a power inverter for the motor control section. I can't imagine the motor consumes much more the a 1/4 HP.

There are a few 50hz lyrecs in the states with an invertor on them. swapping of course the way to go.

also a friend in the uk uses a 60Hz

As usual Markrob, your assessment is all textbook and no practical. If you do what you suggest there are fluctuations in speed. This is reported to me by some who have tried this. The rest of the electronics in the ZT console cabinet are switchable via a selector on the back of the electronics rack accessible by removing the left panel if facing the back of the lathe. 3 or 4 electrical standards are selectable. Same as the amp rack. The motor, being a synchronous motor wound for a particular standard, is the tricky part. There has been some discussion on the site regarding using one standard motor in a different standard country. You can search it. Nearly every time, every Professional cutter I'm aware of has changed out to a proper standard Lyrec. But, what someone is ok with may vary. If, however, one is looking for a
Neumann, why on Earth would you want to set it up contrary to manufacturer recommendation with respect to the stock model? Why not go proper all the way? Me personally, that's what I strive for.

Hi Todd,

Well, you don't know for sure either. Just hearsay on your part. In your case no technical facts to dispute my assertion. I really don't see why this would be any worse as long as the frequency is crystal controlled and voltage regulated. What makes the power company sine wave any better than a local invertor? Maybe the people that tried this in the past this did not spec in the correct type of invertor or perhaps they did not exist at the time. In any event, if somebody were able to come up with a lathe that required 50 Hz, it would not break the bank to give it a shot.

If the 60Hz to 50Hz inverter puts out a steady sine wave with enough power I can't see how there would be any problems. If there is speed fluctuation the inverter isn't doing what it's supposed to be doing.

The old fashioned way to do it is to put an oscillator through a power amp that can output the required current and voltage.

The lathe did not sell at the $33K asking price. I think the prices of lathes are starting to fall. ;-P

The fact that it's in Russia and having no amps has more to do with it than the price.

I tried to purchase that lathe this past November/December and the same sort of things happened to me as well. At that time, after bitching here on this forum about the asking price, I offered them $30k and now they want $33k? At that time, they had it listed for $35k.

But they won't haggle openly with you while you're discussing the price with them via email and they furnish very little information about it.

I walked away from it all together! :|
