Double Groove/Horserace 6n/8n feedscrews Preorder!
Presto 6n/8n DOUBLE GROOVE HORSERACE RECORD feedscrews!
Ever wanted to make a novelty double groove record? Well, i have. And I finally got a working prototype.
And now I’m having a run made, but they are pain in the rump and my machinist doesn’t want to do it more than once, so I am having a preorder for anybody who wants them. They are $180 and should hopefully ship by July 2019. My machinist is skilled, reliable and prompt and I’ve worked with him on feedscrews for the last year so I’m 100% confident in his ability to deliver. But, as always, I back up my sales with a guarantee. If it’s not ready by the end of July I’m happy to refund your money.

Last chance to preorder the Presto 6n/8n Double Groove/hidden track/Horserace records. My machinist is getting ready to start cranking them out this week. They are 160 feedscrws divided by two grooves, so 80lpi per track.

Here is something I cut quickly with Mike's Horse race feedscrew. Best Part (original) and sax cover.
70LPI moves quick on a 7" blank but it was fun to cut/test out.

When did you get yours? I placed a order for mine back in April and have not gotten it yet.
You are lucky!
I always get left in the dust when ordering feed screws.

I ordered it months ago too. It just came very late last week. I think I lucked out because I had ordered some blanks and embossing sapphires and the timing worked. He's usually really really good about getting packages shipped.Jccc wrote:When did you get yours? I placed a order for mine back in April and have not gotten it yet.

Interesting. I wonder if he is getting them back from the machinist in drips and fills the orders based on spot in line? Either way I'm sure it will appear soon and you'll be cutting cool novelty discs in no time!Jccc wrote:Oh ok. Scott was the first to order one, so he got the first 80:80 lpi working sample. The rest of the screws should be arriving in the next couple weeks.

Re: Double Groove/Horserace 6n/8n feedscrews Preorder!
so i finally have the double groove feedscrew after some modifications from Mike to make it fit with my 6n and it now fits perfectly.
I have been experimenting with it using embossing with tungsten shank and i am getting mixed results every time i do a new record.
Some times i can get a successful double groove record and the other times one of the grooves runs into the other causing only one groove or a garbled mess!
I have took some weight off the cutting head and lowered the volume of the music being cut but i still get mixed results.
The method i have been doing is i will mark the record with a marker to know where Groove one starts. I then place the needle on the record and begin embossing.
When that is done i go back and to where the marker is and i drop the needle a few millimeters away from where groove one starts i then start to emboss groove two.
I know know when the double groove is successful when see the grooves get thinner and it looks shiny in apperance.
some times is a success the other times not.
I was thinking maybe i have to change out the feedscrew blade on my 6N?

Re: Double Groove/Horserace 6n/8n feedscrews Preorder!
You dont need to change the feedscrew blade, but you need to watch which thread of the screw that the knife goes into... if it lands in the black groove for the first round of cutting, it has to go into the silver groove the second time. You cant judge it by looking at the groove on the disc. It has to be aligned with the knife on the screw itself.
And you really need to switch to sapphire embossers for this, because the tungsten embossing grooves are too thick, that is why you are getting groove kiss and skipping.

Re: Double Groove/Horserace 6n/8n feedscrews Preorder!
i do watch which thread the knife goes into Before i cut / emboss.
A Problem example i have is:
i start first song on the Black thread.
When that is done i start the second song on the silver thread.
i drop the needle maybe a few millimeters before where i started the first thread (Black)
But once i drop the needle and it gets close to the first thread it some how gets caught in the first thread groove or really really close to it.
So upon play back all i hear is the Newer groove that was just cut. The other groove seems to have disappeared or i can slighty hear it come in and out no matter how i drop the play back needle.
Every one out of 10 tries i will get a successful double groove. For me i am just not getting consistent results.
I do have some old sapphire needles and see if i can get some thing good. If not i will give one of your needles a try and see if that solves the problem.

I dont know... if the original track disappears, then that means that the knife is in the same thread on the screw...

Re: Double Groove/Horserace 6n/8n feedscrews Preorder!
im gonna mess around with it some more because from what im seeing i set the knife in a different thread then the first one i used.
i do see the black color and then right next to it the silver. i even make sure i to rotate the crank arm to see that it stays in the correct thread.

Re: Double Groove/Horserace 6n/8n feedscrews Preorder!
I use Mike's sapphire embossing cones.
I didn't try and make any "hidden tracks" yet. But for the test cuts I did try it on I just set it in one of the feeds, cut the track. Then I placed it in the different color in the feedscrew, let it run for 6-7 seconds and then dropped the second run. I got more successes than failures. :shrugs: I also haven't given it the business, either as I am in the process of moving. Again.
