I'm in Brooklyn, NY-looking for a Presto 8D or 8DG, 6N, Fairchild lathe, or a Neumann AM131 or AM31A. Also looking for a mono grampian head, (EDIT: or a stereo head depending on price). Ortofon head possibly as well

my email is eli (dot) lief (at) gmail.com

thanks for the link. Probably a good idea to get the lathe first, since it will probably have a head on it.

Not always... Besides, you don't see Grampians as often as Presto 1-D or 1-C. As I understand it, Grampian is a very nice mono head. Might be good to snag it if that is what you want to cut with. You can alsways find an overhead to put on some sort of turntable. Any old platter will do. I've seen a lot of modern servo motors with control boards that you could use to make a homebrew turntable with. Very high torque. Very high accuracy. Set the speed you want with a digital readout.

Is that a good price for that head? The guy is also selling a presto head for 400 something dollars, which is a bit much

Well, was that a good price in the past? No. Is that a good price now? No. Is that current Market Price? Yes. It seems all record cutting gear is going for inflated prices due to demand the ever dwindling supply of such items. We are seeing a lot of gear go for unusually high prices right now.

Strange really The guy is looking for an AM 131 as well However he is questioning a price of $400
An AM in any condition would bring any thing up to $10-15 K today in that I am sure
Cheers

My point was, after all, its still a presto head (and I know where to get one cheaper). A presto 8DG is really the main thing I am looking for, but why not list a few things.

I was high bidder the last time he posted that 1-D at $130.

He cancelled the auction less than a day before closing. I asked him why - he said he wanted no less than $650 for it...

First off, $650 is the moon for a 1D.

Second, the guy obviously doesn't understand how ebay has been working for the last 4 or 5 years since the Sniping programs took over... you never have any idea how much it will actually go for until the last second. The first ten days of the auction are just so that people can find it on there and set up their snipers. Cancelling a full day early is stupid.

What would be a fair price for a grampian D or C?

He keeps posting it as a 3-day auction. I don't know what he expects...

I got mine Grampian type D for $350 ... I guess the normal price would be around $500 but you have to find someone who would sell it

Who did you get yours from? If anyone has just a head for sale, I would be interested in buying it. As long as its not inline with this eBay guys prices for the presto and grampian head!

And therein lies the rub. Remember before when I mention supply and demand... Good luck finding any cutting gear worth having. Especially at a realistic price. Right now, everything is in high demand. There is a reawakening going on with vinyl. But, sadly, there are no major companies producing disc cutting gear anymore.

I got my Grampian Type D head together with a Presto 6N lathe and custom-made tube cutting amplifier for $500. But that was almost exactly thirty years ago. I'm sure it cost a lot more when new and maybe a bit more now.

Being a solid-state guy, I knew nothing of tube amps and thought they were old pieces of shit so I sold the amp for $500 to a lawyer with an Australian-made Nuttall professional disc cutting lathe. It seems he had the last laugh.

I would pay 500 bucks for a Grampian head (especially a D). Thats just how it is these days. However, I wouldn’t pay $650 for a presto head! thats insane!

I got mine from the guy who was selling scully system on ebay recently ... rhythmshack is his nick I think. I wrote him and it happened he had a spare one. I guess I was extremely lucky as I only once saw type D on ebay for $500 ... otherwise always more. But there was discussion on this forum long ago and it was mentioned the value of 500$.

I agree with opcode66: now there is big difference between "should" and "is".
