I can vouch for the one I briefly used, and kept as a spare: while a Fairchild 541A head might not have the best high-frequency response, they will cut absolutely stupid levels in midrange and bass frequencies, the likes of which I haven't seen done by anything else less than a Westrex 2B. Far louder than could ever be played back, and right down to 4 hertz without breaking a sweat.

I bought one of these from Al's warehouse.
I had seen one up for sale on ebay a little while ago, and it seemed cool to keep around as a spare.

I had heard the tales of it's considerable level handling.
I haven't tested it myself yet though.

(also, 'abandon hope, all ye syli' has to be the funniest disc cutting mention I've heard so far.)

Gone for $232.50 - and that's with the advance ball.
