Why Is he using a Garard turntable?

Because he wants a real turntable - one that has high torque, low rumble, etc etc and because he's got the money to buy a Garard. Unfortunately, not many people can afford more than a Technics SL1200. Garard is the way to go for overhead disc cutting set-ups if you can afford it.

Every good quality (broadcast) idler drive turntable have more torque than sl1200
the goal is to keep the rumble very low...

Yes. I had a 401 with an SME tonearm but I gave it away. I had no idea they would be worth anything. The size and the weight of the motor tells you what you can expect. This is one hell of a turntable. Highly recommended for overheated cutting.

I had the pleasure of listening to a Japanese pressing cut with an SC99 head driven by valve amps. Can't remember which Tonearm was on the Garrard 301 turntable but the old and very classic Tannoy monitors were also driven by valve amps.

The last time I heard anything so good was playing an acetate in Cohearant's studio. I could have sworn we were listening to an LCR monitor set up but it was only L and R monitors - no centre speaker at all.

If you can afford a Garrard 301 or 401 turntable in your set-up.... Go for it!
