Photo of Scully lathe at Gold Star, 1967
Here's a fun shot of Sky Saxon from the Seeds (far right) in the Gold Star cutting room, 1967. Scully lathe fully visible in the background. Are those the cutting amps on the wall to the left? I figured it should go in the lathe trolls archive....

Fela--
I'm in the long, slow process of restoring a 50's mono Scully 501 that was taken completely apart. I hope to be cutting in a year (or two).
Here's another shot of the Gold Star Studios cutting room, mid-60's, Phil Spector and Tina Turner:

So Gold Star used Scully 501's. I figured as much; what I saw of such copies I have of The Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' " and Sonny & Cher's "The Beat Goes On" had more in common with that than the later model 601. At least now we have confirmation.

By the way, the gentleman at the center of the top photo is almost certainly Howard Holzer (of HAECO). I withhold 100% certainty because I didn't know him until 1969-1974, and he's a bit younger in that photo than I remember him.
I don't know what association Howard had with Gold Star, but (1) it would be no surprise to see him in the vicinity of a Scully lathe, and (2) he and Larry Levine were both instrumental in the A&M Records startup in 1967, and prior to that Larry was an engineer at Gold Star.
