Re: Metal work - pulling to form
Hi CV,
The chaps you seek are doing a trade which they will admit is actually called "electroforming." Chaps who do electroplating proper are not typically also able to electroform stampers, unless they are in the common practice of referring to what they do only as the ekename, "plating" - even though they are only reverse-plating onto the electroform, which isn't really electroplating - it's electroforming (get me?). Plating is a different effort which usually entails running a pulling bath faster and briefer with addition agents (for lustre) that would be, essentially, pollution in an electroforming tank. The goal of the plater is to finish a piece of metal with a phase of metal which has different properties than the substrate and which is not to be removed. In contra-distinction, the electroformer's goal is to build up a new piece of metal (not finish an old one) and be able easily to PART the formed metal piece from the mandrel (or disc mistress).
I offer this Nickel button of wisdom so that you might more effectively locate your new contractors. They are not really galvanizing, even though it's a sexy word which would be cool to use if it were true... To galvanize means "to energize or inspire to take action by means of (bio-)electricity." It also means physically plating Zinc. Named after Luigi Galvani who was interested in galvanizing frog legs. However, it is Luigi Brugnatelli who is the father of Electrodeposition (the umbrella term for electroforming and electroplating).

Man, you just can't let it go can you. You know full well what the OP is looking for and although I don't have an answers to help him or any witty replies, your crusade has gotten a bit old. Please drop it.Serif wrote:Hi CV,

Hi Well Made Music,
Indeed, I do think I know what he's looking for and that's why I worried that if he were to look up in a directory someone who says he does electroplating and/or galvanizing, unless that person were one of we few with the secret nick-name language of the profession on our immediate right, he might not actually be talking to someone who can help at all, since most electroplating shops are not able to make stampers. Only the electroforming job shops (which surprisingly may or may not call themselves electroplating businesses) are Brugnatelli cell operators who can help the OP. Whereas, no so-called electroformer can't make him stampers/masters... Ergo, my post stands, uncorrected. He wants to seek a British electroforming job shop. This is not a problem.
To CV: Call Porky or Abbey Road and ask whom they are now sending their lacquers.

Re: Metal work - plating
There are no companies dedicated to just making stampers in the UK anymore. Companies like Gedmal Galvanic and MusiTech are long gone. Pressing plants with their own plating department might do it for you but they might prefer to plate your lacquers only if they are pressing.
There is a company in Holland that just makes stampers and Ted posts here occasionally : Galvimat.com There is another fellow in Sweden who just makes stampers too.
Making stampers from your lacquers is great but where are you going to press?

(Please have them not plate your lacquers. IL: That is, the silver/dextrose coating should electrodeposit onto the Nickel and not the lacquer disc.)
Cheers,

Re: Metal work - plating
These are Souri's discs
I remember that in the past here someone tried to plate some Souri's discs without big success.
But if anyone would like to try it out, or already has, here are some questions/ideas:
1. Classic lacquer discs have an aluminium plate inside, which prevents them from warping, of course this helps a lot during electroplating (or electroforming - please don't correct me - I don't know which term is best to use). Pre-nickel temp is normally around 42°C, which could be theorically acceptable to Souris discs, but you also have to consider that this temp is the rule of thumb for the classic lacquerdiscs with the aluminium inside. Souri's discs - with no metal inside - could be much more stressed and warp much more easily. This is just a thought. Material is harder than lacquer, but there is no metal inside. So .. who knows?
2. Lacquerdiscs are always scratched in the back of the center before being plated in order to have conductivity in the center. How to do that with Souri's discs if there is no metal inside??
3. And what about the edges? (same concept)
4. Silvering etc.: theorically nothing should change in the formulas, but the behaviour of some agents like the stannous chloride might be slightly different from what happens with lacquerdiscs.
These are just some ideas given by experience with lacquers. I know Souris records, but never tried to plate them.
Like all plants in Europe, we are super busy so I cannot say we can dedicate time to test this thing, I just wanted to point out a couple things for someone who wants to try.

I don´t like the idea, that masters are cut with souris "lathe",
for me, this is not a lathe, this is a dubplatecutter, works good for that,
but it has no professional sound (no feedback).
You have also to change the cutting angle (is this possible with souris machine?).
As I remember, flo has tried to electroplate the plastic discs, it works sometimes,
sometimes not.
Problem is the silvering and the contact to the power supply, as phil describes...
Also, the cuts are not that quiet as laquer cuts, but some people don´t care

Jinks yourself? Seeing as you are new to all of this we dont want you to end up at the wrong plant. I dont think you are going to jinks yourself.Cutting Vinyl wrote: i can not say at this stage ' about who is pressing ' as i really dont want to jinks myself.
Who was able to plate for you without insisting on doing the pressing? Was the price reasonable? Do you think others might want to know where they can get this work done, too?
You need to know that stampers made at one place are not necessarily compatable with every plant and that there are ways to ensure compatability and avoid expensive msitakes which is why I asked. It's fine to ask for contacts and to "keep the information coming" but please remember that the information superhighway is a two-way street.

Re: Metal work - plating
thank you for replies ' many people have contacted us about where to send them - Thank you .!
i was asking about lacquers ' just to be sure , where i would send them for metal/electro forming its a simple question '
NOONE is trying to make stampers from a vinyl plate.
you are a funny lot.
lacquers sent for electro forming ' would seem a black art ' but you have to start somewhere ' when hunting info on people that offer this service.
and the pictures im posting are just pic's of cutting ' not lacquers!!! . just some pics of cuts because im very proud of my cutting work and SOUND.
- everyone likes pictures.

Here we go:
Plating in the UK!
VF in Hays, Diamond Black in Luton, Phoenix of Vinyl in Park Royal and Music House in Edmonton will all do plating for any one who pays
MMP in Germany as well as Galvited in Holland, in the continent
Also I am sure that RI will do it if one asks nicely, and a few others there as well, it is only a few days apart by mail so no lack of plating facilities within a few days of each other
Max has now retired, he was last man standing as a plating only facility in the UK
Not hard to set up a plating facility any way but is it worth it if one makes a few titles a week?
Lots of questions are academic in this very forum with people gathering information about something or other which never comes to fruition for a variety of reasons
At least there is a reference for some one out there in the future
Pity he will never search the prior post's any way but shoot of another request some time later as it is the norm. Ha
And Serif lay off OK!!!!
Cheers

So,only the actual specialists need to know all the facts as they are. o: ?
I looked it up. It's electroforming, dude. Lay off Serif.
