Jccc Modified Presto 6n cutting
Here is a short video of my Presto 6n with vacuum and heated stylus cutting a picnic plate. I just hooked up a Fairchild cutting head to it and the sound is really well compared to the Audax head i was using before.
The head cuts really loud with the bass and mids coming in good but the highs need a little more work.
The Audax head cuts pretty loud as well with the Highs & mids coming in nice but the bass is ok.

Re: Jccc Modified Presto 6n cutting
It never occurred to me to mount a chip tube from the top like that. Of course! Do you recall what size thread the tapped holes in the top of the carriage take?
Re: Jccc Modified Presto 6n cutting
Im sorry i do not know the thread size of the holes on the lathe. I got the idea for mounting the vacuum there when i looked on Alan Graves site here:
http://www.prestohistory.com/Presto1.html
There is a Presto 8d that looks like it has a vacuum attached in the same area as mine.
I found sheets of metal in which i drilled holes two holes in it to mount to the top and another two to attach the copper piping. i then messed around with the angle until it started picking up the swarf perfectly.
I then attached another piece of aluminum to it so i could add the heating element for the cutting needle.
So far it works great.

here is a sound clip of the record after it was cut from the lathe. I slowed the pitch of the record down so i could scratch longer over it.
It has the surface noise on it due it being cut on a picnic plate. The heated stylus really helps alot by taking away most of the noise but when cut on a dubplate the noise is gone and the music sounds nice and clean.

here is a short advertisement for a small lathe cut record EP i made.

the picnic plate was recorded at 45 rpm on a presto 6n with a Fairchild 541A-727 head that i rewound for 8 ohms myself.

here is the Presto 6N cutting a plate. My camera is really bad at close ups as i wanted to show the vacuum picking up the swarf from the picnic plate.
Re: Jccc Modified Presto 6n cutting
Hello. Here is my presto with a Neumann cutting head mounted on it. I used a capacitor holder to hold the cutting head in the mount.
I know it looks sketchy but it works!

Re: Jccc Modified Presto 6n cutting
how it sounds?
could you upload a sample sound file ?

Re: Jccc Modified Presto 6n cutting
Hello. The head sounds excellent! I am powering it with a qsc rmx 1450 power amp.
The signal path goes : sound source, EQ with fake riaa, to power amp.
In the playback recordings i can hear the motor running but it is really faint but when the music comes in the motor sound disappears.
I try not to process the sound too much.

Hi,
I notice you have no dashpot for damping. Have you had any issues with the head fluttering?

Re: Jccc Modified Presto 6n cutting
What do you mean by fluttering?
Maybe i can try and make a homemade dashpot since i already went this far with this make shift set up of mine.
Any recommendations on what kind of materials is used on making a dashpot for the 6n?

Re: Jccc Modified Presto 6n cutting
I'm not at my 6N right now, so this is from memory.
Picture a small can, about the diameter of a quarter, and two inches tall. It has a slightly smaller disc inside it with a bar poking upwards through the center. It's filled with viscous liquid: glycerine or mineral oil.
Aw, I'll take pix soon.
And yes, I know, feed screws. Soon!!

Re: Jccc Modified Presto 6n cutting
Thanks steve! I did a search for dashpot and i saw the make shift one that flo did with the bottle cap and screws. I will try to make something simular to that.
Re: Jccc Modified Presto 6n cutting
I made a adaptor for the neumann head to fit on the presto 6n. I used some Delrin plastic that i picked up in the scrap bin of a plastics place and then went to work.
Here are some pictures of it mounted on the lathe.

Re: Jccc Modified Presto 6n cutting
I relocated the vacuum ti the original location that i had it before and it is working great.

Re: Jccc Modified Presto 6n cutting
hello the cutting head is Fairchild 541A-727. it is rewound for 8 ohms. I have the audio signal going through a akai eq for the RIAA and then through a tube preamp to boost the signal a tad bit.
