Looking to commission a very small record (13mm diameter)
Hi there,
I have an idea for a piece a jewellery, which in theory should not be impossible to make but I've not yet found someone able to make it.
So the idea is to create a very small record (approximately 18mm diameter) which could be worn as a pendant but then could also be placed onto a record player and a very short sound recording could be heard.
But to do this requires a grove approximately 13mm in diameter being cut. Does anyone on here think this is at all feasible? If so them please get in touch either on here or you can email me at spacecadet0697@gmail.com.
I can pay for your time and materials etc.
Below is a rough drawing of how I see the final piece looking. I have a friend who will set the record in silver, so it's just record itself that I'm looking for some help with.
Thanks for reading.

I don't believe that's possible, simply because the center hole is 9/32".
No cutting head can get that close to the center spindle, let alone make more than one revolution.
If anyone else has experience, let me know. On the 6N and the VR, the smallest I've done is 5" diameter records.

Well, I know 1 inch discs are possible. For Neumann or Sculy it is a matter of making an extension bracket for your cutterhead suspension. So, for instance, I could 3d print a block that would couple with the suspension arm and float the suspension box (and thereby the cutterhead) closer to the center spindle at the inner diameter. For Neumann, you would also likely have to disable your microswitches in the back by unplugging the cable for them. That way, you don't have lead outs triggered while cutting a small master or dub like this.
This was done for old dolls that talked. You pull a string, and the doll said something. I had a bugs bunny like this. The recording was on a 1 inch record. Cut in the fashion previously described.
If no one else takes this job for you, I will. But, you might not like what I would ask for it. It would include the time to engineer and print a plastic bracket.

I have a few of those doll records, which I can't play because of the auto return on the turntable. Can't get past the "label area".
How would you manage the playback once the tiny disc is made?
regards!

Re: Looking to commission a very small record (13mm diameter
Hello all,
Thanks for the replies.
I'm lead to believe record players that DJ decks allow the needle to be moved all the way to the centre. I can't imagine [Insert superstar DJ here] wants to worry about his/her needle auto-returning when they're performing their set.
So I'm glad to read that some of you think it is possible, I'll be in touch with you guys soon.
Thanks.

Re: Looking to commission a very small record (13mm diameter
Hi all, this is a better-late-than-never update. This project was completed in April 2015 but I've only just made a youtube video explain the concept... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvZjT1KPse8
Flo was my hero, he did an amazing job. The hardest thing now is actually finding a turntable that can play the thing. In the video I use a portable Crosley turntable. Ideally I'd like to find a DJ deck that could play it but the limited number I've tried have had the arm being slightly too long. If anyone knows a turntable which would have the needle going all the way to the centre then let me know.

I recently fitted my VR's Technics 1210 deck with a Rega RB202 tone arm.
It pivots all the way to the centre spindle and a couple of inches further too!
Might not be exactly what you're looking for, but I thought I'd mention it all the same
