Re: Plating and Pressing in the media.
Nice video. I suggested some years ago right here that a laserdisc mould in an injection moulding machine would be a good experiment. And now someone s doing exactly that. Interesting to see they are looking for a new material to replace vinyl - hopefully this will put an end to dimwits calling records "vinyls" so I'm all for it. The take-our robot on that machine is way over the top. Good luck to them.

Isn't this similar to how old polystyrene 45s and LPs were made?

Re: Plating and Pressing in the media.
Curious how much more this process would cost and the price of the machines.
The other issue in my opinion is that the label would be put on after the record is pressed? The record would look and feel different.
A big part of the resurgence is nostalgia....
I love the idea of pressing records with a biodegradable compound....

Re: Plating and Pressing in the media.
The polystyrene 7" presses I saw at EMi UK were injection moulding machines that gave a little compression stroke at the end of the cycle which is what the guy in the video mentions here too. Note that this is the same process used for DVDs. I don't know about 12" styrene records but I believe they were only made in the USA.
Injection moulding machines are super expensive compared to compression moulders. The guy talks about a 70% cost saving in production costs. The no label issue is easily fixed - the Germans made a record that appears to have a painted on label back in the day and it looked fantastic.
He makes a very valid point - compression moulding with PVC is a destructive process for the stamper as the material flows across the grooves at high pressure. Note that one CD stamper as used in injection moulding is good for 30,000 pressings minimum. They could be onto something here.

Interesting idea on painting the labels, could be a process similar to how they paint LEGO bricks.
Re: Plating and Pressing in the media.
Injection moulding has certainly a lot of pluses
It is a fact that since development as well as refining the process never stopped
Unlike our industry which come to a dead stop more than 30 years ago.
There is a huge amount of expertise world wide which far surpasses the few in our game.
There is no doubt it will be a success.
The label issue! It's no big deal.
It can be heat applied pad printed, silk screened the details can be on the stamper than hot stamped even with gold leaf etc etc etc.
New material!! That be a challenge certainly not impossible
And the cost of a machine? No more or less than current new machines.
In actual fact not having to use steam it will be at a lower overall cost in initial expenditure as well as running cost.
Very nice to see
Wish them every success.
Best

Re: Plating and Pressing in the media.
Actually i have an alternative material for record pressing on my mind: special formulated polypropylene. However, i'm pretty sure that few people will notice my suggestion
