Re: Presto 8dg refurb. (Lathe porn)
After much emailing, and sending bushings back for different ones, i finally pin pointed exact motor bushing replacements.
Contacting lord directly, i got the shear bushings out of them fairly easy, but when i brought up the motor mount bushings and the 45 plate bushings, i got hints and the data sheets. Which i attempted to decifer, contacted and verified measurements with mcmaster carr and promptly ordered the wrong bushings. Luckily, mcmasters customer service and return policy is pretty great and i located at least the correct motor assembly bushings and made the swap.
They fit perfect, and i got a half an inch rise back for connecting the filter disc to the anvil.
So to save some other people trouble, the 4 "surface style plate form mounts" for the presto 8dg are
Mcmaster carr number:6008K26
Mcmaster carr does not carry the 45rpm plate bushings. They have similar products, but none in the size needed.
Old vs. New you can see they rotted out and the motor plate made a silver indentation in the rubber bushing from resting basically on the bushing mount.

Re: Presto 8dg refurb. (Lathe porn)
Is there any reason anyone can think of why the 45rpm plate couldn't be mounted on the back side of the motor?
It would be easier to service and out of the way of the oil gauge there

Re: Presto 8dg refurb. (Lathe porn)
Its been a bit.
Im kinda at a down point until the 45 puck is rerubbered and the cutter electronics come back. I have an ametek vac im trying to build into the suction/platter system, but i had a setback that damaged the armature. Ive filed it down and repaired most of the displaced material but still have some sparks.
So as a break, i made this to hang on the wall

Re: Presto 8dg refurb. (Lathe porn)
Ive now made some headway on the vacuum system. I very stupidly plugged in the vacuum motor and sent it spinning, causing some minor damage. I think i have the motor repaired and ready to fit into a box i can sound dampen im hoping.
Im half thinking, since i dont have a front cover for the lathe cabinet anyway, tapping rack screw holes and mounting the devices in front. But the other half of me thinks to mount the devices on the shelf inside, and build another layer of sound dampening around it.
Im still fabricating the missing foot pad for the cabinet. Im pretty close.
Im also thinking of moving the "dish" on the far left side of the platter anvil and mounting the tonearm there. Then moving the "dish" in front of the overhead arm.
Slow going.

Oh how i wish it was that easy.Gridlock wrote:Put a book under the corner and fire it up
Im still needing the 45 rpm "puck" rubbered, some kind of motor system for the lpi setup, need the cutting electronics repaired, the tonearm mounted, the vacuum system and chuck built and probably more adjustments.
Otherwise i got blanks waiting for the groove.

Considering rational thought patterns and how much getting electrocuted sucks (try to keep one hand in your pocket so your body doesnt complete the circuit) you should take your time but hey man were not gonna live forever. If you got a passion do it. you will end up being a role model for everyone around you which is kinda rare these days and especially with analog sticklers and other timetravelling types...

Well, it has been awhile.
I've finally got my vacuum system together i think after much trial and error.
I don't like the light dimmer on the lower settings. It seems to "chug" instead of run smooth. I can't decide what to do with that. Im open to suggestion!
The real test will be how it handles the platter and swarf. We shall see.
And i made a holder for the tonearm. I'll be swapping the motor caps to the correct values too.

Re: Presto 8dg refurb. (Lathe porn)
Chuck prototype one: I hate it!
I used some ball bearing type bearings, unsealed and rugged, but too "skippy" for a chuck i think. I need precision bearings.
However i can cut and route vacuum hose with this proto in mind. It'll work for tests i think. Lets see what the vacuum thinks.

Re: Presto 8dg refurb. (Lathe porn)
Did a little more rough-in work on the playback arm setup. Im gonna do some test plays hopefully, then really clean it up. Im hoping i wont get any noise from the mechanics transfering.
There's really almost no other place for the arm to sit and not be in the way. So i'm really hoping this setup pans out.
Anybody have rumble on there recordings with an 8dg?

Tonearm plays back and mono switch functions appropriately. Just some fine tuning left.

Pitch motor v.1 had plenty of rumble through to the platter, but moved the carriage. Time for some dampening.

For anyone needing their rubber puck redone, i had mine done with terry's rubber rollers to excellent success.
I could not find the original measurements anywhere, from anybody, so i measured the gap from the capstan motor to the filter disk and added a millimeter.
1" 22/32nds worked pretty good for me.

Thumbs up for Terry. Sameal. your lathe is fairly taking on a life of it's own now. Fair play to getting it to this point. Thank you for documenting.sameal wrote:For anyone needing their rubber puck redone, i had mine done with terry's rubber rollers to excellent success.

Thanks peter.
Now im working on a depth coil and solenoid setup. I think it's possible to squeeze one on here.
