Hi,


Recently I decide to change my noisy vacuum suction machine with a vacuum pump.
Goal, is to achieve less noise while cutting.

Also, I ve seen that many people use Aquarium pumps (to be honest I didn't get exactly how aquarium pumps works).
So, the Thomas (or Rietschle) pumps are expensive enough as new item. As used item, is probably rare to find in good condition.

Recently, I visited a friend who cuts on a VR and I see closely the pump that Souri uses (with the plastic jar & silicon pipe etc)
As I love DIY spirit (because I'm learning many things while building things ) I decide to make a noiseless vacuum pump system on my own.

I found here in Athens in a local store a vacuum pump that main purpose is for refrigerators.

The price of this pump is around 175€.

Is anyone have any experience with that kind of oil vacuum pumps? (Rothenberg or Topshak)

hi
I used so many pumps and gave up completely and used my plastic tweezers for a few years to remove swarf until I found a 1958 speedivac laboratory vacuum with the oil pump at the top ,it was used for 50years at my old analytical job were we use to suck the air out of a pressurised oven full of rock samples .it did not suck good any more so we threw it in the trash (where hours later I put it in my car) then had it in storage for years then removed the oil pump section and its the best vac I've ever used .

also search for the right pump.
It is clear to me that it cannot be a piston pump so that the air flow does not pulsate. But the search for the right pump starts with the most important question:

The question is which volume flow is necessary? (In liters per minute or m³/h, or CFM)
And how strong should the volume flow be maximal (so that the stylus is not sucked in)?

I've seen recommendations to use a variable AC transformer (variac) on whatever vacuum or pump.

Yet to try this myself but sounds like it'll work great. If what you have is too noisy or sucks too strong, this decreases the voltage to make it run at a variable lower speed. Got one for $50nzd on Banggood.

I don't know if the 30PSI will work.
But I just go small (just 30€) for experiment.

Interesting. Once you have tried this, please write your experiences with it. I would be interested in how loud the thing is. And how warm the pump is after an hour. (Vaccum is given as 15PSI).

Is yours an Edwards VBD design? I'm interested in repurposing an old speedivac - do you use it on PVC or just lacquer?

Ok, I didn't know that it would still work without the oil pump. Did you remove it to reduce the maintenance and oil vapour?

hi I removed it as I was told that the oil was carcinogenic. also, the window was cracked and the rubber lining underneath was worn.. after doing that I noticed it sucked more so I bypassed it and went direct to the hose.

iam aslo assuming that in its original state this pump would have been king ...like I said above this pump for more than 50 years was used to suck the air completely out of this massive oven and hold the suction overnite till our rock samples were void of oxygen.

Yours is a 2 stage right? I'm a bit confused as to how to run them without oil - I thought it was necessary to create the seal and lubricate the moving parts.

I plan to use an oil-free side channel compressor (radial compressor) for suction. Does anyone have experience with it? Can this work?
(Vacuum pumps with oil can produce oil fumes during purging - albeit small).
