SP10 Rubber Mat - Uneven
Hi!
I'm cutting on a VR with SP10, everything going and sounding great but got a small problem I want to resolve. The rubber mat for the SP10 is not 100% flat on the edges, its fine for 7" and 10", but with 12" it lifts the edges, its only very slight and not causing a big problem, but I'd like to address it if possible.
Does anyone have any advice or know anyone that can manufacture an 100% true flat rubber mat for SP10? This the 2nd one I've tried, the other had a very slight bump just in from edges too. Again its not a big issue but if someone knows another option of mat it would be great.
Thanks!

Hi ya,
Quick question... are you absolutely certain that it's the mat which is the cause of the 12" outer diameter lift?
For example, you need to ensure that any mat you use sits inside the raised lip of the SP10 platter. Most standard turntable mats are too large.
Also, if you're using the default SP10 mkII mat then it will have a small section in the centre which is lower than the rest of the surface to accommodate the raised label of an LP.
When you lock the blank down, it will cause it to dish very slightly as you're pushing it into this lowered section - particularly noticeable on a 12".
You may very well have thought about all this but I just thought I'd throw it out there!

Hi! Yes with the centre I raise with stickers, roughly about 4 but it works out flat, otherwise of course you will dip when clamping. With the mat its the original to sit inside the outter lip, its actually visible by eye, watching it spins there is a kind of cut/rim line on the top edge of the mat, and on each rotation you can see the slight raise on one section.
Maybe I just need to try buying another mat direct from the SP10, I've tried 2 and both had slight faults, so wondered if anyone can manufacture this sort of thing

Re: SP10 Rubber Mat - Uneven
yeah I think mine is slightly uneven too, thanks for the tip about the center being lower.
Even though I've been using mine upside down to give the flat appearance, the center did sink in when I locked a blank down!

Re: SP10 Rubber Mat - Uneven
Just checked my stock Technics SP10 mkII mat and, sure enough, it's not flat either!
Never knew that as I don't use it to cut on - I bought a neoprene one from eBay ages ago which is perfectly flat for cutting on.

Thats a good shout using a neoprene one, dont suppose you got a link?
Re: SP10 Rubber Mat - Uneven
It's been such a long time since I bought the mats that I can't be absolutely sure.
However, as I'm in the UK, I think I used these guys: https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/number1gasketshop/Turntable-Mats/_i.html?_storecat=33339673011
They can make just about any size turntable mat you need - just send them a message.

Thats really helpful, thank you!
Re: SP10 Rubber Mat - Uneven
Just got my mat from the place you recommend, it's perfect! Completely flat, I tested against the 2 sets of original technics mats and they are definitely cut badly, so this is perfect, thanks!SueDenim wrote: ↑Wed Mar 25, 2020 5:58 amIt's been such a long time since I bought the mats that I can't be absolutely sure.

I asked for a completely flat mat for cutting to the people of number1gasketshop. They suggested a cork mat as it will remain flat, but I believe some trolls had issues with cork + heat (@tragwag?) and even suction, right?
Based on your experience, would you buy a neoprene or a cork mat?
Thanks!
Best regards,
Fer

Re: SP10 Rubber Mat - Uneven
I'd go with a neoprene mat. There's a little too much natural 'give' in cork for my needs.

It’s more expensive but I solved the issues with 12” edges in my SP-10 with an stainless steel precision plate. You can heat and flatten the records with a UV lamp also

Re: SP10 Rubber Mat - Uneven
Very very very happy with my new 2mm neoprene mat from number1gasketshop. Best purchase I've made in a long time!
PS Thanks @SueDenim and @tragwag for your advice
