Isolating vacuum unit.

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Isolating vacuum unit.

Hey everybody. Here is another question for you. Is it and has it been in the past, common for the vacuum unit of a professional lathe to be moved out of the room to lower the noise in the room?

I understand the concept of a machine room but even the Neumann manual says to just put the unit under the frame of the machine.

I am interested also if increasing the length of the main vacuum hose would have detrimental effect on chip pick-up.

Right now I am having good luck (knock on wood) with my chip removal and don't want to screw up a good thing.

As always, thanks for the insight.

You should get the vacumm pump out of your cutting room if it bothers you. You probably dont need this noise.

When the supplied vacuum pump on the VMS70 broke down, we used a vaccum cleaner with a swimming pool vacuum hose attached to extend the length The vacuum cleaner was in the other room and being a 240 volt country it was ofcourse a 240volt vacuum cleaner. I think we ran it off a 110volt transformer to reduce the suction. Chip removal was never a problem but you will find out in less than a minute if it is.

My earlier cutting lathes (AM32B and VMS62) were all set-up with a vacumm cleaner too, because that's how they came. The VMS70 worked like this for years (well, until the mainstream demand for vinyl died). The simple answer might be to "suck it and see".

So how is your cutting coming along then?

Thanks guys. Very interesting. I am using swimming pool hose now but the length is only about 4 feet.

The set up is coming along slow but sure. My platter is level. I have been making cables and today I am wiring in my VU meters.

When I picked up the machine, the circuit breakers started acting up and Albert kept them and worked on them. Today or tomorrow we are going to get them installed and see what happens.

I have been cutting un-modulated grooves and following the manual guidelines. When it is all set up, I will post some pictures.

That's great! can you send me a picture of the one you have set up? I'm using a little hand vac with hose attachement, but it is SOOO damn loud. I tried putting it in a box, but it overheats every 5 minutes.

I did a similar thing with a hand vac. I used a simple light dimmer to lower the speed of the vac. This will work with a universal motor. There is some hysterisis when using a cheap lamp dimmer as a motor speed control. You have to start at full speed and lower the speed from there. If you try to restart the motor at the last setting, it won't start.

The aquarium pump sounds like a great idea. I'll have to give that a try.

you need more of the "white powder". and the chip sucks like hell..hehe....
i had this troubles with vms80... sometimes it depends on the tube material. silicone tube is good for laquer...for pvc sometimes not....
we found a black tube from festo... and the white powder then all was okay...

so i wish
hard eggs and soft chip

muaaah,
I use the WISA/yusanaga LP-40A pump:
http://cgi.ebay.de/WISA-Yasunaga-Linearmagnetpumpe-LP40a-Enddruck-4200l-h_W0QQitemZ270282340025QQcmdZViewItemQQptZde_haus_garten_tierbedarf_fische?hash=item3eee1536b9

but be careful, there are some china clones available,
maybe they use another (louder) technologie...
maybe it doesn´t work that good with pvc, because the diameter
of hose is bigger = slower air flow.
there must be a difference between a 1500Watts cleaner and
a 100Watt Pump :)

this is the one, used in neumann 80 lathes:

two of them, like flo wrote,
I think it is a WISA 1000 Model, a bit old.... :)

Hi,

Been using a Vinylrecorder for 3 years now. This last year I've been cutting at least 10 times as much as the previous years. I bought Souri's vacuum when I bought the cutter and set it in a different room, but this year I think it's starting to get old. It kinda "smells", it looks perfect, it's not burnt, but it starts to smell different... Also, I placed it in a different room so it's not noisy in the cutting room, but it's noisy in that side of the house, for hours!

I imagine it's time to start thinking about replacing it and improving the system if posible. Souri has a vacuum pump for sale, but it costs 465 Euros...

Investigating a bit I discovered this old thread, anyone has updated news? Should I go for the fish tank pump? Any recommendations?

So I guess you abandoned the fish tank pump idea for the vinylrecorder. It didn't work out well? No one is using the vacuum pump or the fish tank pump anymore? It sounded as a good idea...

we have both. the pump is our backup. then we forget about it and cut with pump...
like moritz says :works both

since we have an isolated room for vacuum, air compressor, noisy power amps, we do not hear theses things anymore.
