SOLD : Scully Westrex Cutting System
Just putting my feelers out there to see who is interested and what price I can get for a complete system or parts.
I have a Scully lathe complete but dismantled. It was the lathe used at 8 ball records out of NY. It was working and cutting when I took it apart and stored it.
I also have a Westrex 3d head working (checked by Len Horowitz) and a 1500 series pair tube amplifiers modified by the late Al Grundy. (also checked by Len Horowitz)
I want to sell complete so we can have more people out there cutting.
The Lathe is located in Los Angeles. I can have pics up later this weekend if time permits. I have had a few offers and the lathe might go in as is condition. I'm looking at 6500 for the lathe.

Re: Looking to sell a Cutting System
Here are some pics of the system. I am getting the rest of the parts out of storage so more will go up as soon as they are available.
This Lathe comes out of Tennessee in the late 90's and was set up by flo when he was in LA. I went as far as cutting silent grooves on it and moved shortly after. It was stored and now ready to find a new home.

Re: Looking to sell a Cutting System
Also, it's fascinating to see the innards of this system, and how it all goes together. It seems to be one of the mysterious interim models in between the gearbox and the fully automatic variable pitch Scully systems. I don't think I've seen one before that has a variable pitch knob that only goes up to 350 lpi instead of the usual 400, and continuously variable pitch with both outside-in and inside-out feeds. I'm sure W.B. will have a field day with these pictures.
Re: Looking to sell a Cutting System
The control panel looks like the type that was in that 1956 film The Sound and the Story on the making of LP records at RCA Victor. I sensed it looked different from the other control panel layouts I've seen. As for the 70 - 350 lpi layout — I've read of Scullys with pitch control knobs ranging from 60 to 400 lpi, in use in at least two studios - Capitol in L.A., and Columbia in San Francisco (leased from Coast Recorders from 1970 to '78). The Capitol, I can vouch, as I have a few L.A.-cut 45's with pitches below 70 lpi - one such single I have has a pitch of 64 lpi.
My question is, which model number would have corresponded to the serial #489 on that lathe? This was definitely in the 1950-55 period, in-between the 501 gearbox model and the 601 'knob' model with two rows of buttons on the control panel (whose known S/N's range from at least 563 to 619). Unless this was an early version of the 601?

Nice shot of how the Scully ways are pyramidal, but with the top of the pyramid lopped off. They "boogie" mesas.

Re: Looking to sell a Cutting System
This lathe is from tennessee, not the 8 ball one. I haven't gotten to that one yet.
I am still getting the parts out Of storage so please hold tight. As soon as I have everything I will respond to all the questions....

Re: Looking to sell a Cutting System
A bit of a necropost because this system got sold awhile ago, but it looks like the folks who bought it did an amazing job of getting it up and running. Here it is at work - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sUExh7JO2g - watch that pitch knob go! Touchscreen automation too.
Re: Looking to sell a Cutting System
Thank you, Emily, that's my system, been hyper-absorbed in it for about 18 months. There will be more pics and stuff as I shoot them, but I want to thank Len Horowitz especially for opening his shop to me, furnishing me with every scrap of data he has, both written and spoken, and generally being a Master Mensch! And big hug to Oscar for finding all the extra bits even after the sale was made, another major cool Troll. I have not had so much plain fun in decades! The damned thing sounds bloody amazing.

Re: Looking to sell a Cutting System
Ej, are you using the knob as a meter indicating the lpi or is it riding the feedscrew actively?
great job!!

Re: SOLD : Scully Westrex Cutting System
Hi Leo, the big knob actually controls the speed of the feedscrew, it is in turn controlled by the VPU via a small gearmotor/error pot combo that's part of the original lathe. Loosening the smaller knurled knob declutches the servo for manual operation. Thanks!

EJ, well done. The Crestron control system is impressive. Who would have thought?
Can you start a new thread detailing the restoration of the system and how you integrated the Cestron control system? That would make a great read.
