Rubber ring around the lacqer?

Once you have cut a master laquer, you have metal stampers created and have records pressed from them. Discuss manufacturing here. (Record Matrix Electroforming- Plating, Vinyl Record Pressing.)

Rubber ring around the lacqer?

Hello everyone!

During the stage of pre-plating (lacqer 10 "and 14"), is it necessary to apply around the lacqer rubber ring or only apply to the next step ?

Thank you in advance for your advice.

Good day!

The rubber ring is to minimise the thickness of the nickel deposit on the outer edge to make separation of the parts easier. It is very necessary when plating metal to metal otherwise it might be necessary to trim the edges of the parts with a circle cutter before separation is possible. The problem with trimming the edge is that the diameter of the mother will decrease each time you make a stamper and one day the mother will be way too small for plating stampers. I think in this day and age where runs are smaller, you will never get to that.

In the heyday of vinyl we used to press 30,000 copies of one title over time and always used rubber rings on the lacquer, the master and the mother. There is no nicer feeling than peeling a nickel electroform off a lacquer disc without having to scrape the edge with a file or use a circle cutter.

Hello and thank you very much for your clarification.

Yes, it is certain that the ring must be used for metal-metal.

But my question was for the operation of pre-plating.

For my part, I work as a pre-plating for lacqer 10 "with a hot 35-36 degrees:

15 '- 3A
15 '- 6A
30 '- 8A
Total: 1h00

Should I use a ring for this step?

Cordially.

Hello David!

Usually, "they" do 10A-20A preplating for approx. 20-30minutes, lower currents
can provide a rate if initial coverage and can cause noisy parts...
higher currents can burn the surface near the contact. temp arround 35/36 celsius

then, you put the rubber on the preplated laquer and can proceed with
higher amps, in a different, "high speed" tank (not more then 49 celsius!!!)
with maximum 140-160.

In my opinion it is nearly impossible, to do low and high amps in one bath, because
temperatur & amperage must match, therefore you need a very fast and precise
cooling & heating system with controller

Good luck!

Hi,

I buy matrix rubber rings from a company called Tracy Val, they are in New Jersey and have these handy.
Maybe this helps you! Let me know if you want their contact info.

Best, Celine
