Westrex RA-1574-A power spike

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Westrex RA-1574-A power spike

Do any of you trolls have experience with a Westrex RA-1574-A?

I have a re-capped specimen that produces a power spike at the end of the power-up cycle--when the timer relay engages. The relay time is over a minute--as opposed to 20 to 30 seconds described in the manual. It sounds like an electric chair being switched on. A VU meter across the output shows a momentary surge. It doesn't seem any higher than an appropriate program signal. But it is a little worrisome.

Is this surge normal for a 1574?

If not, what can be done about it?

I know Len and have already sent him an email on this subject. No reply yet. In the past (eight or ten years ago) he told me that he has zero experience with the 1574-A. He had used the the final 1574 variant. I think it was the 1574-D. On the other hand, the D does use the same power supply as the A—the RA-1567—which may well be the source of the problem.

I have the same situation with my 1574E amps - it's output stage bias circuit related, annoying but not harmful. Plan to do a mod for this at some point, will share result at that time.
Scully "500" with Westrex 3DIIa,
RA-1574E amps.
