Buy It Now for US $25,000 ??? I don't think so. It doesn't matter who owned it.

I've edited the title of this post to accurately reflect the content.

Well. You can't start a business with this lathe to compete with VMS70, VMS80 and Scully owners. You could compete with Presto owners but I don't know any Presto owners cutting masters for production use so it can't rally be used commercially today.

Al Grundy's last AM32B lathe was sold for US $5,000. This could be used to compete in the market with some add-ons. That lathe was sold with both the VA32 and VA62 controllers so you could set it up as either an AM32B or a VMS62 Special. This without head and amps.

So I would say this lathe is worth less than $5,000 and then add the value of the cutterhead and amp. I think it has more historical value than commercial value and would be nice in an audio museum if kept complete. After all, Bill Putnam was an audio legend.

For say 20k I could get this retrofitted with an SX68+VG66 rack+ Neumann head suspension all rebuilt and working.
This still would not deal with the variable pitch issues. A Pitch13 could be your only option or cut fixed pitch/fixed depth.

The lathe to a collector should be worth around 10k.

I just like looking at it

The lyrec motor alone can go for 5K.

They are including amp and head too. I figure about 2.5K for those items together and in working order.

I know people who would pay up to 3K or 4K just for the brass ring and chuck table.

So, that is 10.5K value right there. The other 10K value is in the lathe body, cabinet, and electronics. Not quite 25K. I think an extra 5K was just tacked on to the relative value I see represented here.

Pricey, yes. But, as was stated, this is completely determined by the current demand for such gear which is in very short supply.

That lathe was so ridiculously incomplete, and it went for 5,000. You can't compare incomplete prices to fully working

And you can't start a business with this lathe as the seller suggests.

And the market spoke. Sold for US $11,101.00 Dietrich estimated that one nicely.

I didn't think it was worth $25K....

I think they just stopped the auction. Doesn't mean it was actually sold...

Again... The motor alone can sell for 5K.... 11 for all in this market is too low. I highly doubt that is how much it sold for.

Oh so it wasn't sold for that amount?

Todd, how much would a custom made BLDC turntable motor cost? More than. 5k?

Less than. However, that would not include the motor pedestal. I don't have a solution for that at the moment. So, I'm not sure what the total including that would be right now.
