Track Jumping with Vinylrecorder

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Track Jumping with Vinylrecorder

Hey, I have a problem, probably easy solution, it's just that this is the first time it happens to me. I'm trying to cut a 12" record and it always happens the same: all songs will be cut perfectly except for the last song on one of the sides. On the live recording I'm trying to cut, the singer screams his lungs out absolutelly out of tune. Several times. Every time he screams, the turntable stylus will jump as if there was a skid on the record. If I look at the record through the microscope I can see the cut waves are very extreme, that's what provokes the stylus jumping.

And now, the question: what would you recommend? Cut the stereo signal? Cut the trebbles? Doing such thing makes the problem disappear, but is it "legit"?

Any ideas?

Can you get in there with a dynamic EQ?

Hard to say without hearing the program.

the trick in the old days is that such a track would be the first track and not the last track, is that a possibility. Use a compressor to bring the level down, eq the track so that it will cut. This is all part of the pain of cutting discs. The problem with digital sources is people forget the limitations of disc recording. Watch your levels try cutting at a lower level etc etc etc.

I've changed the title of your post to better reflect its contents.

Firstly, use a compressor/limiter as already suggested. Check the LF EQ - is it excessive? Does the singer "pop" the microphone at this point? If you have a spectrum analyser take a look at what's happening at that point and You'll soon get an idea of what you need to do.

Same suggestions as above.
Another trick can be to do a little volume automation in the man peacks, so you keep the average volume hi, avoiding skipping problems.

check your grooves in the microscope, they may be touching due to the increased RMS of a strong yell (as opposed to the transient of a percussion sound)
making lathe cuts on a Presto 6N, HIFI stereo cuts on vinylrecorder

The limiter with short attack and short-to-mid release will do it

Hi punk rock

I remember seeing a thread on here in relations to high volumes on the vinylrecorder
And track skipping distortion etc.

At the back of the riaa module of vinylrecorder there is a volume knob of some sorts if it's turned up too much you get distorting sounds when cutted, have you checked this ?

I can't find the thread but I do recall reading it, search vinylrecorder in search I'll have a look later To see if I can find it

Any besides that have you had success in resolving your issue ?

Dimi
