Acetate Masters.

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Hey yall. Wondering if anybody knows how many times I can play back an acetate master before it shows signs of wear.

Correct. You'll get more plays out of it but each time you play it you will wear it further, to the point where you get noticeable distortion and build up of surface noise.

are you asking for listening's sake or plating/mastering?

dubs can be played back just about as many times as a listener would want - if concentrating on low counterweight - but if you put +6g and a straight-armed tonearm, you can kiss it goodbye real quick...

a lacquer should not be played at all before plating, all testing should have already been done on the outer edge of the disc.
