Meissner Model 9-1065

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

hello. i just bought this cutter(and it should be coming in the mail in the next few day) and im curious if anyone has any experiences with this cutter before?

the seller says that it cuts but "cuts with noise". any things to consider before it comes on how to fix this problem?

it came with:

-3 blank disks
-9 cutting needles (steel)
-2 reproducing needles (1 sapphire, 1 osmium)

this still cuts with a good amount of high end surface noise, im not really sure where to start to fix this problem. does anyone have any ideawhat might be the cause of this problem?

surface noise

If there is still a lot of mechanical surface noise in a quiet unmodulated groove, I think I would try a variety of new lacquers, and fiddle as much as I could with a combination of adjusting the depth the cutting stylus is inserted into the head, which will change the cutting angle slightly, and also the depth adjustment, which will interact. But a good sharp stylus with well polished burnishing facets cutting into nice fresh lacquer is probably the only way to obtain a quiet cut, without stylus heat.

I've had one of these for a few years. With a good cutting stylus and blanks, you should not have a problem getting a quiet groove if the depth and angle are properly adjusted. The sound quality is not great because of it's limited frequency range, but you should at least get a relatively quiet groove. It won't be as low as a heated stylus would produce, but definitely low. The motor noise is more noticeable than any groove noise.
Have fun!

Hi Trolls
I've the same problem!!!
i've got pvc and poli blank from ameise.
I try to adjust angle, as much as possible.. ,
I try to put weight upon x-26 (how many grams does it need?)
i try to modify needle lenght (how much is standard needle lenght?)
i try to heat with lamp...
but surface noise still be there , and volume are quite low

Any advice?
Do you think is possible record a decent mono record w this machine?

with the way the suitcase cutters are set up, you can't angle the head the way you need to for embossing on poly (I can't speak to PVC at all)
the low volume is probably due to the crystal element being dried out.
In general the suitcase cutters will cut a frequency range of about 60 Hz - 8 kHz at the most, with a much lower volume than pressed records.
they were made for the home consumer, recording speech at a reasonable quality.

your best bet is to a get a new stylus and a box of lacquers from apollo if you really want to see what the machine can do under the circumstances it was designed for

I change some x26 position and now it works better, but volume is still low...

However everytime i try to cut (turn needle face ) while i m cutting, there s a noisy 'shhhhhhhhhhh'.when i reproduce it 'shhhhh' is higer than track s....
Is there too much pressure?
Where is the problem?
Thx
A

are you trying to cut polycarbonate?
it's not possible, to get a relatively quiet groove with poly, you have to emboss.
Which is not possible with a suitcase cutter such as the meissner.

pick up some lacquers and a new stylus from Apollo and give it a try.

there could be many reasons for the low volume, most likely the cutting head is not able to cut near the volume of a pro cut record.
