Presto 8DG or 8GV prototype rebuild - lathe in a box

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

A year later and I am nearly there.

I only have the 45 motor to fit and build the board to power this part.

Thanks to Amp Doc for sorting out the circuit from the 45 adaptor

Pictures soon
Happy to learn something new.

Nice. I discovered that the new "Rek-o-Kut" "Transcribe" tone arms aren't true 16" - so I need to source a tone arm myself now.

Please post photos when you can! Definitely curious to see how it all turned out.

Best regards,
Steve Berson

Really? The new rek-o-cut ones don't work with our large platters?

heh, I could see that considering I bought a new strobe disk from them, and the center hole was off, and it was a square photocopied piece of paper, making it totally useless to me..

I wish I could find my 3 speed metal dual one.. :/
generally its for reproduction.. but i like to play wif it sometimes.. :P

http://www.esotericsound.com/ArmsAndHeadshells.htm

They make 2 new 16" tone arms, of the Rek-O-Cut branding, one of them is fluid dampened. They are more modern S style arms with a standard removable headshell mount, like an over grown SL-1200MK2 Tonearm..

but apparently as steve said, these are no good.. steve care to elaborate?

I ordered it based on their advertising saying it works for 16" platters - but after receiving it I found it is in fact not long enough for mine! Serves me right for not measuring first based on the specs they provided on their website. Lesson learned is that I always have to look at the fine print, and measure twice - cut once, etc. !

Hi - The Presto lathes have 17" platters making tonearm selection even more difficult. I'm thinking about the SME 3012, it is long enough for clearance on the Presto.

Simon - How are you going to mount the arm on the 8D? I've been debating the best location. Maybe move the microscope? Or a plate coming up from the back of the lathe body?

- Kris

Well its been a mad couple of years, new relationship, new job, moved house, got married and yes the 8DG came with me, Time to pull it out of the packing boxes and get it up and running again. I have a nice place to put it at the back of the house. Happy Days if I can fit it into all my other projects.

Now to start the process of buying blanks and needles - here we go again

Tooooo many projects that’s my problem. I had no chance to even go near the lathe since my last post.

This year I am determined to make the effort and get it back up and running
