I've always known them as 'dial gauges'.

Us "Engineering Types" call these Dial Test Indicators. The one in your Photo is an "Analogue" Clockwork Type, and nothing at all wrong with those, however, you can now purchase a "Digital" Version like this one, for Pennies off the ubiquitous Bay. Regards Soulbear

I'd call that a runout gauge.

I have one and the box says "dial indicator". I use it for leveling my turntables.
