DIY Overhead Lathe

Anything goes! Inventors! Artists! Cutting edge solutions to old problems. But also non-commercial usage of record cutting. Cost- effective, cost-ineffective, nutso, brilliant, terribly fabulous and sometimes fabulously terrible ideas.

Thanks a lot the_ducktail for encouraging
I do have to work a lot because there is really a lot to do :
So far the least worst I could get is on a CDR with a stellite stylus.

My main problems :
- I cannot tilt the head to 45° which is what needed for proper embossing.=> So I need to make a new head

- my grooves are not deep enough, I tried adding some weight but I think CDR are too hard for my stylus and as a result, most of time, the turntable arm is skating

- I need to heat the media if I want to practice a bit more before switching to Makrolon.

Hi there.
Some updates about my machine. (I know I go slowly...)
I replaced the aluminum cones with saline ampoules (much lighter !)
I modified the arm so I have a lot more possibilities regarding recording head tilt.
The control box has been modified : it is now fixed to the base of the lathe and I added a jack connector.
Regarding the stylus holder, I sawed a prong of a wooden clothespin and glued it to the dowel with glue gun. I can go now easily to 45°c and way more.
I did not even test it...I'll try to do so this evening or tomorrow.

Very well , but to obtain the considerable improvement of the recording - in this instance of the expression , to it is necessary to perform construction very stiff , to see industrial such device classiness eg Neumann , Scully , base this to be so that cap to give back power , twitch on plate recording and not on construction jj suspension , next project to perform already from full aluminium and not from aluminium- profile , shoulder suspension to perform possibly most shorter as is in Neumann , to see and to look on attentively cap SX90 , in she every detail to have huge meaning , in relation yours cap and dynamic transducer which you to use perhaps to be well , but strand transfer to be limited to max 4 kHz with very large fall mechanical power in this frequency range , considerably better you to reach result transfer and power if you to use transducer piezzo electric about diameter 50 mm , you to conquer strand from 100Hz to 10kHz , necessary power to their power supply to be very small , but to be necessary higher master tension within 50 V - 120 V

Can you tell us about your screw drive motor and controller? We're in the initial stages of modifying a Scully for variable pitch.

Thank you for the tips vmspoland, even if I know my work can nowhere be compared to what you achieve.
audadvnc-> I used to have a MFA motor controller but I was very disappointed with it : it was dead three weeks after purchase  (18 euros at my local electronic store).
Since my electronic knowledges are very small (I am just begining), I got this one on ebay : http://cgi.ebay.fr/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=281040088331&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 I am very satisfied with : deported variable resistance, 3 positions switch. (I am not affiliated with the seller).
For only 8 euros (delivery included), I cannot complain.

For motor controler, be carefull NOT use switching PSU (Pas d'Alimentation à découpage for other french trolls :-))
Regarding motor itself, I use MFA 950D-501 (50:1 reduction).

About my latest embossing tests, well I am pretty frustrated, I only had one side left of a lexan disc to test and it was far not enough to set properly the head (time really flies during tests)...the worse is Lexan/Makrolon is difficult to purchase here and every time I have to order on the web, add shipping....and wait for it for days :|
I'd like to find an alternative easier to find and better than CD-R when it comes to only test. not very easy it seems

flozki, honestly, I don't understand....I tried several Leroy Merlin, Castorama and stuff and I could find Plexi, Opale but no lexan. I even tried with Plexi and Opale but it was just awful.
If you have any address, I am interrested !

While I kept interrest in the topic, I did not post anything since a very long time it seems.
So few monthes ago I started all from scratch. the lathe is more or less done (no photo) and the head is nearly done as well.
I am not really satisfied about the overall result but for health reasons, I will not be able to work on it until next year.
I did what I could with what I had (a really really bad 3d printer drill press....) and I could not test it since the V spring is still missing.
the transducer are these oneshttps://www.sparkfun.com/products/10975
Torque tube is a wook piece drilled to carry an embossing stylus : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Record-lathe-cutter-presto-record-in-stylus-needle-styli-rek-o-kut-recorder/282085271275
rubber damper comes from an old dvd drive.
The head is crazy heavy (1kg !) but I tried to keep moving part as light as I could
Well ...what can I say ? I hope this will throw me something decent....all your comments are welcome to improve this...

I am back with my old obsession engraving records.
Unfortunately, I do not have a lot of time for this passion/hobby so my progresses are small but I don't give up.
I emboss.
My best (well least bad) results so far are with a plotter blade but the funniest part is I do not use the blade side but upside down there is a cone sharp enough to engrave plus the whole thing is in tungsten....so I can basically buy any plotter blade over the internet (and they are quite cheap)...there is also someone on ebay selling tungsten cones....they are maybe better....I will give them a shot one of these days.
I believe I will not be able to go futher anyway with those CDs which are too hard to be embossed correctly but everyone here knows it (even if some goods results were also shown in the past on the lathe trolls message board)
I ordered some transparent and black PVC blanks to Myshank and we will see if I can get some better results with my wonkey gear.

I received Myshank blanks last week. Nothing to complain about these are great items. (and thank you for the extra discs by the way !!!!!)
I tried to emboss with them but I can feel that to do that and having good results, I need to take my diy lathe to the next level.
First my stylus is not really well seated in the wooden torque tube. Not sure it is steady enough to engrave properly...so I tried to redesign my torque tube.
I got these aluminum standoff on ebay : http://www.ebay.fr/itm/10-pc-M3x30mm-Espaceur-autour-Rouge-Anodis%C3%A9-Aluminium-FPV-RC-Entretoise-NEUF/302582515073?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
diameter is 5mm and the weight is 1g each.
What I wanted was drilling a 1,5mm inclined 15° hole in the middle on the lenght of the standoff...not that easy with a regular drill press....
So I designed and 3d printed this jig wich worked great...only had to enlarge the hole a little with a drillbit but nothing too serious=> .stl file here https://drive.google.com/open?id=1me_I78B118KTRuH-QRp_VAPg0ufRkAbS :-)
Once I got my hole in the standoff, I worked on the piano wire attachement : I put a screw in the end of the aluminum standoff then drilled a 1mm in the middle of the screw (you had to do this sloooooowly and with coolant if possible not to break the drillbit)
I stuffed the hole with loctite glue then inserted the piano wire and let it dry for half of an hour or so. this is my result (the only focused photo...sorry others are blurry....fucking phonecrapcamera)
total is 2,77g but I will trim the piano wire at some point.
Feel free to comment guys

Completed designing and printing springs to replace metal ones for my transducer.
This is PLA, I will maybe try with nylon next time....
The coil is not glued to the spring yet. What bugs me is if I do a mistake the coil will be dead.
I will have to find a way to build a coil winder at some point so I can have spare coils...

Hi I share here the sources of my 3d files to build my stereo head.
It looks really ugly on previous posts pics but when I made it my 3d printer was closer of a pigeon turd than a printer. Now my printer is way better
You will find the sketchup files plus the stl to print it straight. stl have been verified.
