THE GRINCH / 1925 DICTAPHONE

Anything goes! Inventors! Artists! Cutting edge solutions to old problems. But also non-commercial usage of record cutting. Cost- effective, cost-ineffective, nutso, brilliant, terribly fabulous and sometimes fabulously terrible ideas.

rebuilt recorder with "new" stylus. the recording stylus on these acoustic machines is a cupped tip sapphire rod .031" in diameter. over the last 90 years these styli become dull and no longer engrave the wax, this is a vertical cut format. i heated the stylus holder with a soldering iron, this softened the original glue and i used a pair of hemostat's to physically rotate the rod to a new edge. the stylus is now virtually new and should last the rest of the century. this is an mp3 transfer from a you tube video playing on my ipad. the machine is running at 160 rpm which gives 5:30 recording time on a 6" dictation cylinder. this machine is 93 years old. the second video is playing "the entertainer" acoustically through a walmart transmission funnel...
